Interesting podcast with Bill and his dad, the guy who termed the phrase “Second Row Joe”.

Has much of the same criticisms of Joe and the extreme and narrow three point philosophy that many of us do. But what I found most interesting was his observation that much of the time at home games where he’s a season ticket holder close behind the bench, Al and Smart both largely led the huddles and timeouts, with Joe only taking a fraction of time to talk with the guys most times.

We’ve heard other reports of that, as well. Fairly suspect stuff with a sense that Joe knew all along how over his head he really was. Got to think that contributed to some of the locker room angst about him.

Didn't Udoka do something similar which he picked up apparently from Popovich?  The first part of the timeouts had the players talking and strategizing amongst themselves and then he came in after it had been going on awhile.

Yep. Pop does the same thing. Spends the first half of the timeout out on the floor with his assistants conferring with them while allowing his players time to talk to each other. Then comes over for the 2nd half of the timeout to say a few words.

So apparently people online are saying Timelord only played 14 minutes because he got hurt too.

Wonderful. The guy we practically load managed all season still ends up getting hurt during the postseason.

I respect his effort and love the talent, but at the same time he still hasn't developed any sort of offensive game which isn't just dunks/lobs/layups, and he's very injury prone. They need to see what's out there and if something's good, Timelord should be dangled in a potential trade.

He wasn’t injured. According to Shams, he was dealing with some sort of food poisoning and was throwing up throughout the game. That’s why he was limited to 14 minutes.

Seems like maybe if we play 1-2 more games in each round than we should, it starts adding up (Tatum, Rob) at the end.

What the Celtics need desperately is a coach or assistant coach who knows how to break the zone. It's been the bane of our existence for 4 straight seasons now and amazingly enough, none of the coaching staff have been able to solve it.

Would you consider JJ Reddick as an “out of the box” idea for an assistant coach? He seems knowledgeable on his podcasts when he breaks the games down. He can double as a shooting coach as well.

Yep, Brogdon too. Turns out Timelord was actually sick but point still stands, it all went downhill for us yesterday. Tatum injured 25 seconds in, Timelord sick, Brogdon still hurt

Even if we advanced it may have ended ugly vs Denver tbh who were fresh and looking dominant

that is high school type stuff. really shows how weak our coaches have been then.

you run zone screens and a 1-3-1 offense and attack in high post and then the gaps using your wings. it really is coaching 101.

Shams and a handful of others are basically saying Joe is staying. He’s owed 14M guaranteed over the next 3 years and the plan is likely to get a few experienced assistants with him since a lot of them were scooped up or left right before the season and Mazzulla never had a chance to form his own staff since the Ime incident occurred basically right before the season and there was no time

I’m surprised to see the 14M but I’m guessing that was when they decided to officially name him head coach mid-season

We can debate that particular decision but ultimately, I don’t think they are firing Joe. Just need to hope Silas, Vogel and/or others join to help. Definitely can’t just be Mazzula again.

Brogdon says what we all know. Shift to offense first cost us a title this year. Not exactly ringing endorsement for Joe’s philosophy,

I know! It should be simple but Brad, Ime and Joe haven't been able to get the team to solve it no matter what! It can't be that our players are that stupid that they can't learn something after 4 years, the coaches aren't getting it done when it comes to zone defense against us.

The big issue in firing Joe, is that the person who would most likely do that is Brad.  I don't think Brad is going to fire Joe.  Now maybe ownership fires Joe, but that would imply that they want to actually win a title, instead of getting as many home playoff games without actually spending the extra money.

If it was an x's and o's thing only based on ability, wouldn't Joe already be gone?  Seriously?  We are one of 3-4 teams who are legit contenders.  Are we going to waste another season with an inexperienced coach who can't get the best out of the team?  If it was on merit only, or course we would fire him.  But that probably doesn't have anything to do with it.

Only if Tatum and Brown and the rest of them basically revolted, and said fire Joe or we are all asking for trades would ownership fire him.  They just don't have it in themselves to make that tough of a call, even if it might make next season a title season.

Boston derailed by injuries — shocker. That's only, like, the 12th time in the last 15 seasons that's happened.

WOW. Shams reporting that Joe Mazzulla has 3 years and $14 million coming to him on his extension. Hard to see Wyc eating that.

Surely Shams is wrong on this. No way we gave a new coach with that little experience this much money. If so, Brad and Wyc need to hit the road, too.

I imagine this is wrong.
Shams has to be off here. That would be over twice the minimum, right? 2 and a bit times the minimum for a totally unproven coach? Fully guaranteed??
