If Celts don't make it out of the East, it is time for Brad to shake things up.

Everyone talks about trading Brown, maybe we ought to be looking at the other J.

I was showering and had a similar thought that maybe it's the other J who needs to be looked at under a microscope. What's Jayson's deal? For a 1a, he needs to be leading and make wise decisions. Not chuck 3s after 3s or play conservative or dribble to 2 seconds left go ISO and chuck another 3.
he's soft.  far more often a no-show in the playoffs than Jaylen has been.  before I'd send either out in a trade, I'd get them playing for a real coach because Joe ain't it

Celtics knew young was going to shoot the three. Should have blitzed him

Joe was awful on the bench. White, brogdan, brown, Tatum and Al should be your closing line up

Joe Mazzulla said he thought the Celtics lost some of their pace down the stretch. He thought that allowed the Hawks to pressure them and get in the passing lanes.

No crap. Yet you sat there and watched it happen without doing anything about it. You let Tatum continuously walk the ball up the floor and not even engage in any action until like ten seconds left in the game.

This team is the definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Going to see what this team is made of in game 6. Created unnecessary drama with their effort tonight.

Still think we have a game 7 in the garden Saturday night because this team is beyond inconsistent and still really dumb

Precisely.  It's this type of play that has costed them large leads and poor finishes down the stretch.  There is zero evidence that this team has learned anything from watching the film.

The Hawks had absolutely no answer for Brown the whole game, yet he barely got the  ball in the last 5 minutes.

If we can get JB the ball with a little space while he is moving, he is darn near impossible to stop unless you double him.
Neither JT or JB is really good at ISO ball.  But JB in particular is great when you give him the ball when he is moving.  Backcuts, dives into the lane, even screens around the 3 point line where he can shed the first guy, and attack the next def guy to switch.  Atlanta couldn't stop JB when we did that....why did we ever stop running it?  make the def stop you.

Brown wasn't exactly innocent today either. 3 (or 4) bricked FTs and one or two brutal live ball turnovers in the 4th. He was the guy (no Tatum/Smart, who didn't do anything good once they did come in) in the lineup tasked with playing even, and instead they let Atlanta start their huge run.

Joe seems good at recognizing the problem after the game is over.

Not so much at recognizing and reacting to it during the game.

I mean, this is the stuff that surely makes JB question whether wanting to be here. That we failed to feature him down the stretch even in an awful JT game like this has got to be frustrating.

Granted, they did start doubling him at points, but still we failed not doing more to get him the ball.

You go out and get a tough legit PG for games like these and you don’t even play him. You stay with the guy that turns it over, fouls unnecessarily, shoots terrible 3s. Maddening

these guys might not make it out of the first round. they’re entitled, soft, and think the finals loss last year automatically punched their ticket for a return. in the closing seconds tonight, you could see the thousand yard stares from the guys who thought this was a coronation, instead of a competition. they were stunned the hawks thoroughly outplayed them in crunch time, and they panicked or quit or both. the inability to cleanly inbound the ball with 2.8 seconds remaining with a chance to salvage the win was pure lack of effort from guys who were shell shocked the other team actually showed up and outplayed them.

it’s been said on this forum plenty of times previously: neither J has the killer instinct or leadership necessary to lead a team to a banner. lots of exciting splash plays, big stats, and premature fawning from national sports writers. also plenty of no-shows in big games, wildly inconsistent performances, and a disturbing penchant for under-reacting to losses that should have been wins. unless brad finds a larry or kg, these two pippens will win some games and star in sports center highlights, but won’t hang a banner.

Believe you have summed it up.
The Four Celtic Generals:
Russell - Cowens - Bird - Garnett

The Four Celtic Lieutenants:
Cousy - Havlicek - McHale - Pierce

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
It sucks, because we don’t have the excuse of just getting lazy in game 3 and Atlanta giving us all they had in game 4.

Freaking Murray was out tonight and this still happened. This is about as dejected as I’ve been in the Cs since the Finals because it kind-of proves they don’t have what it takes to win this year. I think most of us realized we weren’t the same team as last year, but there was still hope we would turn it on in the playoffs. I honestly have no idea how we were the #2 defense this year. We seem so bad.

this approach works well until crunch time, because brown can’t be depended on to make his free throws. in a game like tonight, if your defense can’t stop jaylen honestly, send in a thug and play hack-a-shaq with him. until he proves clutch at the line, this is what he’ll get late in games.

Tatum nowhere to be found. 1-10 from 3. He scored 55 points in his most important game which is that All-Star Exhibition. Tonight? Crickets.
