  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Pritchard was only eligible for 3yrs/$67M. This the max he could have received for 2yrs. So, while it seems like a discount, he literally couldn't have been paid more per year than he is on this deal.

The mutual option thing is interesting. I just found out with the Podz deal that it means that only one party needs to opt in. So that means that unless both parties opt out, it is guaranteed. Not sure how the doesn't happen unless they work on another extension.

Not sure who pushed for 2yrs instead of 3, but in the end, it seems like a good compromise. Pritchard might have another chance at one more big pay day and the Celtics have Pritchard locked up for 4 more years (including this one).

We might be better off just paying him the $56 million next season, rather than offering him 3 years at $75 million. We would be talking about his age 37, 38 and 39-year-old seasons.

I can't imagine that 3yrs/$75M would even come close to getting it done anyway. That would mean he would be making less than $10M/yr over the final two years if you account for his $56.6M in 27-28.

I always thought that if it really worked out, they might try to get him to extend rather than have him pick up that option; but I was thinking more like 2yrs/$75M. That might sound ridiculous, but that is really only $18.4M for 28-29, so just above the MLE. It is true that it would lower the cap sheet for 27-28 immensely, but then of course you would have an extra year of Paul George when you might not want to.

TP, thanks for that info. He got added security. Surprised he still chose not to bank on the market.

That's interesting. In baseball it works the opposite way (both parties have to agree to pick it up), and they almost never get picked up. I would expect this kind of mutual option will get picked up most of the time, with the only exceptions where the player waives it to get a longer (but cheaper per year) deal.

I was thinking that the option made it essentially a guaranteed 2 year deal, but now it seems almost guaranteed to be 3 years. That's even better value for the Cs!
I'm bitter.

I don?t believe I?ve seen the ?mutual? option before?. Anyway, I like the deal for the C?s. PP gets a little security. Who knows, a couple more 6 man of the year awards and another ring, maybe he gets his number retired - MAYBE

these players all just signed deals with mutual options

?  Isaiah Hartenstein
?  Keon Ellis
?  Moe Wagner
?  Pelle Larsson
?  Brandin Podziemski
?  Payton Pritchard

Thanks, TP

No I think you were right the first time. Isn't the second year of the deal the one with the mutual option? Not two years, PLUS an option. So two years to the end of this contract, then the extension for a year, then the mutual option for another year.

I can't imagine the 3rd year won't be picked up. If it looks like he would make more on the open market, the Celtics pick it up. If it looks like he'd make less, he'll pick it up.  Only if both sides are miserable wouldn't they.

Yes, that?s correct. The original report was a bit clunky. It?s one guaranteed year plus the mutual option - which, in the NBA, is all but a guarantee. It just allows both parties to renegotiate if they?d like before one of them just picks it up and plays it out as an expiring.

He is signed through 2028 on his current contract and 2030 with the mutual option on his new contract.
