G: Smart, Pritchard
G: D White, Brogdon
F: Jaylen, Hauser
F: Tatum, G Williams
C: Horford, R Williams, Muscala, Kornet, B Griffin

Lotta centers.

Good pickup.

I don't understand this.  White is not a starter if Horford and RWIII are both available.  The depth chart is this:

Smart    White      Pritchard
Brown    Brogdon
Tatum    Hauser
Horford  Grant     Muscala
RWill     Kornet    Griffin

Now we just need a decent vet wing for the final available slot (Gallinari is the 15th roster spot).  Horford and Muscala are both hybrid bigs.  They can play either PF or C.  Griffin may be a little of that too, he was a PF his entire career even if more of a center now.  But I think this is more representative of what their roles will be on this team.  We are a little light in terms of having a "pure" PF.

Has the new coach committed to returning to the big starting lineup? I thought that was only temporary while we had injuries (particularly to Smart).

He was slow to go back to it early on.

Yeah, I think If the C’s had all their players available, Rob and Al would start together each game. Believe it was last summer, but I recall Horford saying that starting games was important to him. He’s earned it, IMO. Plus, it doesn’t really matter who starts, but who finishes the games.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Actually, Spotrac is showing that a portion of the Schroder TPE was used.  The trade would not work otherwise, at least not straight up.

Yes, but until a deal is finalized, it can be added to.  So the following deal works:

Nets get:
Payton Pritchard
Draft compensation

Thunder get:
Justin Jackson
Draft compensation from Celtics
Something extra for facilitating because they need to interact with the Nets in some way.  This could be the rights to an international player who's never coming over.

Celtics get:
Cam Johnson
Mike Muscala

They use the TPE for Johnson, and Pritchard's and Jackson's salaries for Muscala.

It's not happening, but it's technically possible in the world of legal trade construction.

(And actually the deal would be larger, because Johnson is coming over in the Durant deal, which presumably also involves Indiana and Milwaukee for the Crowder portion, so really OKC would have to get something from one of Phoenix, Brooklyn, Milwaukee, or Indiana to make it work, but it would likely be Brooklyn in this not happening deal.)

You could still send Gallo and picks and get Johnson but I think we stand pat and get a guy on the buy out market.

Love this pick up. Gives us more opportunity to rest Al and Rob. His shooting and overall effort will be a nice fit for us too, seems like a good team guy. I wonder what number he wears, he wore 31 and 33 throughout his college and NBA years and he obviously isn't getting one of those here.

Wasn't Cam in the same situation as Grant but was playing with reservations like Crowder in regards to injury hold out? Not sure he wants to come here if he has any choice.

I'd like Claxton myself as he can cover 3 through 5. He plays with energy off the bench.

If the Celtics traded for Cam Johnson, they would start him at the 4.  It’s one reason why it’s not happening.

I remember Brad committing to the two big lineup before the wheels fell off in the summer with Gallo, Timelord, and Ime.

Between Gallo + Muscula + Pritchard + Kornet, that's around $16.7 million in expiring contracts next season.  That means we could trade them for somebody making around $21 million.

Ooh nice.  Maybe Jonathan Isaac or Lauri Markkanen. John Collins makes too much $$$. I like that idea.

Good good

That was pretty close to my guess on the contest!

2 2nds seems like a bit of an overpay tho....

Yeah, I'm curious as to which two seconds.  If it's both of them from this year, that's not cheap.  If one of them is protected, far off, or a swap, that will feel better.

So we get to keep the better of our two seconds this year (be that Houston/TOR/MIA or Portland) and the other one is in 2029.  I'm good with that cost, especially since we have an option on Muscala for next year.  We'll probably have a pick in the 30s on draft night, to use or trade.  That plus Pritchard might get us back into the 1st round.

This has been Brad Stevens strategy since starting. It's how he picked up both Brogdon and White.

He's making the most of it and giving the Cs flexibility while developing internal talent and making us contenders.

Muscala is a strong 3rd string big. He can chip in as an immediate back-up, but is a + as a 3rd stringer. Since becoming a Thunder player, 70% of his field goal attempts have been from 3, at 39.2%. He's also a solid defender and a capable passer (not as good as Kornet or Blake though).

For what we gave up, I like it. Balances out the roster and will allow us to be more cautious with Al and Rob.

"Brad seems better at building a team and Danny was great at accumulating assets.  They may not have always fit but he can get talent.  Brad can build a team in the image of a coach.  He can get players that fit vs one's that may have more talent but don't fit".

  • GOT IT!!!
Stevens isn’t worried about always winning a trade. Building relationships with other GMs that aren’t afraid to deal with him either.
