Smart is not the 3rd in a big 3 the way Ray Allen was.  That shouldn't even be something to debate.  But Smart is an important player on the team.  There was plenty of talk that Smart wasn't a PG and all that.  Plenty of people were saying we needed a score first type of PG.  That is the main point.  Smart is fine as a PG.  And this season has settled into that role even more.

I am not sure that I would say Smart has taken a "leap" this season though.  I think he is doing what he has always done, just a maybe a little more focused.  Shot selection seems better but he can still score when he needs to.  It seems he is going to the post up a little more.  Last season he took 10.1 fga/gm, this season he is 9.6 fga/gm.  FG% 41.8% last season, 42.3% this season.  3p% 33.1% last season, 33.7% this season.  TOs not changed, rebounds a little down.  Assists are up, 5.9 to 7.4.  And still doing all the other non-box score things that he always does.

With Smart as the PG, he is not a pure shooter, so that does mean that we need to make sure that we have enough other shooters on the floor.  RWill is not a shooter but Horford and Grant are.  Brogdon and White have been shooting well for the most part.  This is why Gallinari would have been such a nice fit.  So Marcus is not perfect, he has his flaws and limitations, he is not a big 3, but I remain very much a Smart guy.

This post was so funny in that it was posted right before one of his worst shooting nights ....
