Celtics Regret Trading Bol Bol?

Celtics briefly held his rights last season, before dumping him with Dozier for a conditional 2nd round pick to Magic to save on luxury tax.

Hindsight is 20/20, but I recall some of us intrigued when we picked him up in a trade. ( I recall we got him in trade with Nuggets when we got rid of Hernangomez).

Now that he is healthy, he seems like an intriguing guy to bring off the bench, who we could probably use for rebounding, shot blocking and just overall improving our length.

I regret giving up two second rounders to dump Bol Bol.  But, realistically, we needed to move him to get under the tax, and all of the dumpster divers we signed down the stretch were consolidated into Brogdon.

Opportunity matters so much. If he were still on the Celtics, would he be doing what he's doing in Orlando right now? Almost definitely not because he wouldn't be trusted with the ball in his hands like that.

It's be nice to have another 7-footer on the bench but I don't think we'd actually be seeing much of him if he were still here.

It's hard to fault them given Bol Bol was injured when he came to us and we were in win-now mode. And as Roy said the goal was to get under the tax last season so we could go over it this season and save a year of the exponential repeater tax increase. So I don't think they regret it.

That said, I'm sure it would be worth putting together a spreadsheet of "the ones that got away" and posting it to Brad Stevens and Danny Ainge's Twitter accounts. Put Desmond Bane and Bol Bol at the top and Juancho and Abdel Nasser at the bottom. We can call it the "I told you so file"

Bol was dealing with a lot. A team like Magic can offer him more time to straighten out. It was for the best he went there and he would not be the same if he stayed here.

This.  EVERYBODY in the nba can play.  Every-single-body.  He looks fine in the role he's playing in Orl but I'm not too concerned in letting him go.

This was me complaining about moving him.. I'm sure there would have been some other way to get under the tax. Total bungle.

Wouldn’t be human to not have a regret whenever you make a decision to move on from a player who then turns out to be better than expected. When trading or letting go of young players it’s a gamble and sometimes, as in the cases of Strus, Bol, Bane (etc) you have to have a thought or 2 wishing you made a different decision.  However, you can’t be a successful GM if you dwell on it. You have a thought and you move on.  I’ll bet Danny and Brad have not lost much sleep over their mistakes. I think they have to always turn their thoughts to the present and to where you go from here. Every GM hopes that, on balance, the decisions they make are good ones that more than compensate for their bad ones.

Knowing that they'd get White and be able to make some salary clearing moves later in the year, I'm not sure they would have made this trade when they did, but I don't think they regret it since they wouldn't have known that White was going to be available.
