Well deserved of course - When LeBron retires, they're going to have to figure out an award for him.  My guess is we see Offensive Player of the Year (don't necessarily want it but that's showbiz, baby)

some proper options:
- Most Pampered by the Officials
- Most Whining without a Technical
- Most Catered to by the League
- Most Interference with a Front Office for Roster Construction.

I guess they could name Executive of the Year after him.

Naming it after Hondo was a no brainer.

Too bad it’s happening after his death.  Havlicek seemed to me a very humble guy.  I wonder if he’d love this or maybe would have preferred not to be in the limelight.  My guess is the former but we’ll never know.

Well deserved.

Off the top of your head, does anyone know how many years Hondo was a sixth man?

this link will take you to an article that gives some information about Havlicek as sixth man.

according to his stats, he never started an nba regular season game in his 16 years in the league. absolutely amazing to that much talent coming off the bench.

I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Good article - thanks.  I was thinking about Manu as probably the longest serving sixth man - meeting the starter-quality criteria.

By the time I was more conscious of the details of Celtics lineups, Havlicek was a starter.  I’m old enough to remember him coming off the bench but what I mostly remember about him was his greatness in the early/mid 70s when he was playing 45 minutes a game (or close to it).

Hopefully Brogdon can be the first winner of the Havlicek award.

The LeBron award should go to whoever displays the greatest hypocrisy in their social commentary relative to their business actions (e.g., LeBron claims to care about social justice but profits immensely off labor in oppressive mainland China—if he really cared about social justice for all, he would sacrifice profits by insisting on merchandise being made in free countries).

Of course, they’ll create the LeBron Offensive Player of the Year Award. And it’ll be a pointless award in the sense that it will probably go to the MVP 19 of 20 times. At least we can joke that it’s called the LeBron (Most) Offensive Player of the Year award.

Obvious choice to name it after Havlicek. Like naming the FMVP award after Russell, it solves a bit of a historial problem that the two most deserving people ever of an award didn't win it because it didn't exist yet. A tidy solution.

The NBA now has the Red Auerbach trophy, the Bill Russell trophy, and the John Havlicek trophy. Very cool and very well deserved to reflect the impact the Celtics had on the NBA.
