…Danny had not traded Desmond Bane for two future second-round picks on draft day 2020?

Bane, who turned 24 years old shortly before this season, is currently averaging 24.7 PPG, 4.9 RPG, and 4.8 APG in his third season.

The answer: We would probably be headed towards our second title, right? Even last year the dude nearly averaged 20/4/3.

Ainge didn't draft Bane.  Memphis did.  There is absolutely no guarantee that if Boston didn't trade the pick, it would have selected Bane.  In fact, Boston probably would not have selected Bane given the roster makeup at the time.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

For once the OP is correct.  If I recall correctly, I suggested in a draft thread to use #26 and #30 to trade up for Bane if possible.  Not taking him at #26 and then passing on him again at #30 was brain dead stupid.  The excuses offered at the time for not taking him were inane.  His skillset would have fit great with our existing team and he was a proven 4 year college player so there was a good chance he could contribute early on.  Now I didn't think he'd be as good as he's already become but a range from good bench contributor to solid starter seemed very likely.

Is there a better value in the league right now than Bane?  Is anyone close?  Memphis is only paying him 2.1M this season and 3.8M next season for allstar level performance.

BANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Which would have made it an even more idiotic decision.  There were several deadwood players that could have been cut.

Trading up to draft Olynyk over Giannis was a very dumb decision but not drafting Bane is arguably dumber.  Bane certainly didn't have the upside projection of Giannis but he was much more proven at a higher level and all getting him would have cost was #30 pick and cutting an end of the roster player (e.g. Edwards).  Furthermore drafting Giannis and him being able to play immediately rather than be stashed in Europe for a season or two would have affected the team and could have affected future drafts going forward.  Bane would have been an add-on to the already established team.

Sure.  In a redraft, we take Maxey, McDaniels and Bane.  But, if a guy falls to 30, it means a lot of teams missed on him.

Ok. But what’s the point? That Ainge can’t draft? You can lament the misses, and this was a miss. But every team misses some.

This comment was made on the same night as we went to 18-4, primarily because Ainge chose wisely with his most important picks, now. 1, 3, and 6, when a lot of people wanted him to pick different guys. And when we also had, as useful rotation players, a couple of guys Ainge picked in the 20s - not to mention Time Lord waiting in the wings.

I thought this was going to be about Al's contract extension and him leaving us (which I get happened in 2019, not 2020). Right now, we would either have Alperen Sengun or the two 1sts OKC acquired for that pick.

Imagine Bane and Sengun on our current roster? Stupid Al had to leave us and we needed to use that pick to get him back.

Does Bane get the same opportunity in Boston?  Or is he just Hauser?
