Boston Celtics assistant Damon Stoudamire has emerged as a string candidate at Georgia Tech, source told @Stadium. Stoudamire has Atlanta ties, did a good job at the head coach at Pacific and has also been an assistant at Memphis and Arizona.

I assume that means "strong" candidate.  Say it ain't so.  Our coaching staff can't get any thinner or weaker.

It's not just Grant, but it also feels like Muscala has been shelved for whatever reason. Has barely played since the Break. I know we didn't give up much to acquire him but it'd be kinda disappointing if we essentially just traded for a guy that barely plays at all now.

I know Hauser has done well and he'll get his minutes, but Hauser isn't going to be bodying up against opposing PF/C in the playoffs. They still need to hope Grant can figure it out and get Muscala a little more involved too

I get it for him.  Sucks for us.

Happy trails, Mighty Mouse.

That’s tough, but good for him.  He’s a good coach, and I think we’ll see him in the NBA again.

Celtics assistant Damon Stoudamire informed the Celtics players in the last hour or so that he has accepted the Georgia Tech job, according to a league source. Celtics have no immediate plans to fill the opening. @Adrian Wojnarowski and @PeteThamel had the news first.

Oh man. I wish he could have finished the season before moving on. More importantly, I hope this doesn’t have a negative effect on the guys. Some players are close to him i assume. Our front office has really done a good job in getting assistants. We lost two good ones in Hardy and Damon.

Yeah, it's been a talent drain.  We've lost Udoka, Hardy and Stoudamire, and we haven't replaced any of them from outside, have we?  So, we'll be down essentially two coaches.

Does this necessarily mean he won’t finish the season with us? Isn’t GT’s season over now? Feels like there shouldn’t be an impediment to him at least finishing out the season for us right now.

If he does, that’s a big loss. I believe he’s the only former NBA player, and he seems to have a good relationship with a lot of the guys.

But I wonder if this would be the chance to bring in a more experienced assistant to help Joe out?

Maybe Brad should call Vogel? I feel we need to have a steady, stabilizing guy on the bench. Oftentimes I would see Damon talking to the young guys specially when they play bad or commit a blunder  and is subbed out. Vogel could be a perfect guy to replace him.

They won't bring in anyone from the outside at this time,  I wouldn't be surprised to see Alex Barlow, who's the head coach in Maine, to be brought on after Maine finishes its games, however.

I have no idea who, but there’s enough time for the right person to come in and have a positive influence.  Of course, the converse is true as well - the wrong person can upset the apple cart.   I feel silly making a specific recommendation because I don’t really know the possible suspects, but I think an older, wise, low key, low ego guy - someone with cache but who won’t inadvertently undermine Joe.  Dave Cowens comes to mind.

Since he's informed the players and is officially signing a contract at GT soon, my guess is that we won't be seeing him again.

And, since it's a way for Wyc to save money, I doubt we replace him before next season, especially since the report is that there are "no immediate plans" to replace him.

It will be interesting to see how the Celtics handle this.

As far as I know, Hardy and Mazzulla were picked by management (Stevens/Ainge), while Stoudamire, Miles, and Sullivan were all picked by Udoka (all Oregon guys).  Not sure if Dobbins was a Coach Stevens pick or GM Ainge pick.

So will management let Mazzulla fill out his staff himself, or will they do it for him?  Maybe a combo, Stevens will pick a lead assistant and then Mazzulla can fill out the rest of his staff as he sees fit.

They aren't going to bring in a lead assistant who hasn't been with the team all year.  Talk about upsetting the apple cart.  Someone else will take the role that Stoudamire's been filling in terms running the team the next time Joe gets hurt in a pickup game (my guess is Ben Sullivan).  If they want an extra guy on the bench during the season, they'll promote an analyst, or wait a few weeks for Alex Barlow's season to end in Maine.
