I am still not sure how real any of this Udoka to the Nets talk really is. I am not surprised that the Nets would explore this, I would be surprised if the Celtics just handed him over without compensation. I do expect that Udoka will be an NBA coach again at some point, but I figured it would be next season.
The Celtics can't just suspend him forever. The suspension is one year. I don't think Udoka is contesting that. But for that year, he is fully under contract with the Celtics. At the end of the year, the Celtics would have to either put him back to work or "fire" him. Firing means releasing him from the contract I guess and at that point, Udoka could go where ever he wanted. He would be a free agent.
If the Celtics have no plans to put him back to work ever, then firing him now or later makes little difference to the Celtics. If they fire him, Udoka can go to any team, he could choose to talk to the Nets or any other team. If the Celtics are going to grant just the Nets permission to talk to Udoka, during the period of the suspension, that is different. And that should come with some compensation.
I feel that Udoka to the Nets makes the Nets better. Maybe not enough better to matter but it would be a really bad look for the Celtics if they give Udoka to the Nets and then the Nets beat us in the playoffs or something like that. Why would the Celtics even take that chance, at least without some compensation?
