I can't get a real read on that Howard quote without more context.  Like what was he asked, was that pulled from a longer statement, etc.  Depending on the overall context that good be a giant nothing burger or a real cause for concern.

Dwight Howard has earned $245M in his career, plus endorsements.  I don't judge him for not wanting to sit on the bench.  He may be a bit delusional if he thinks he is still good enough to play "big minutes" but even that aside, I can understand a guy like him not wanting to be the towel waver.  I think Dwight Howard is a clown, but not because he doesn't want to be a towel waver.

This just emphasizes why the Celtics have no reason to go anywhere near him as a FA, even if he wasn't a clown.
I'd need the context on the quote to be able to say that.

What context would make that quote less bad?

I can't think of any, but regardless , the context is he was on All The Smoke with Matt Barnes.  The podcast started with him promoting the reality show/contest he's on, and as a transition Barnes asked him what his status is with free agency and where his "mindset" was, and he responded with that quote.

I feel like I did enough to help them win a championship to really deserve a spot on the team and a chance to start and get big minutes. It didn’t happen, so after that, I was like, ‘Man, I don’t want to have to bust my ass for another whole summer, training three-a-days, going crazy dieting to do all of this sh*t and then get back to a team and sit on the bench,'”

Howard thinks he should start and play big minutes.  That is the context.  Or he doesn't want to bust his ass (not sure what the crazy dieting is).  I respect that.  I probably wouldn't do that either under the circumstances.  That alone is enough for me to realize that he is not going to be happy in Boston.  He isn't going to buy in.  He is going to sit on the end of the bench and pout.  And not go crazy dieting I guess.

That would be reason enough even if the player didn't have a history of being a clown.  Which in this case, he does have a history of being a clown.

I am absolutely fine with the Celtics staying away from Dwight Howard.  I would rather have Kornet.

Well if it was a direct question about him wanting to start or why he wasn't on the Lakers, it would be answering the question.  Based on what Celtics2021 says, it appears it was a general question about his mindset, then yeah that is problematic if that is his mindset.

Well, I want to play. Like I enjoy the game. I want to play, but at the same time, there are like no teams who will really allow me to play. That’s how I’ve been feeling from the last situation with the Lakers. You know, I feel like I did enough to help them win a championship to really deserve a spot on the team and a chance to start and get big minutes. It didn’t happen, so after that, I was like, ‘Man, I don’t want to have to bust my ass for another whole summer, training three-a-days, going crazy dieting to do all of this sh*t and then get back to a team and sit on the bench,'” Howard said. “I can really help somebody win and still play. Like, I ain’t lost a beat. It’s just that I sit on the bench, so people don’t see that. Team’s don’t see that, you know and it’s been like, ‘[dang], do I want to just call it quits and do some other stuff? Or go back at it and show people I still got it…’ But Hell, I want to go out on top, for real. Because I’ve still got it. I still can hoop.

The Howard quote reminds me of a Thad Young clip that was floating around the web about a month ago.

https://youtu.be/w65fskOSr70?t=223

Relevant part starts about 3:43, but Young goes on to say he's been in the league for so long because he holds himself accountable, does the work, comes play hard, even if his body doesn't feel right.  He wakes up and he aches, but he aches because he loves it, and because he loves it he puts his body through torture, 2,3, 4 workouts a day since 8th grade.  And the work doesn't stop, when he got to the league the work just started, and after every contract the work still happens.

It takes a lot of work to stay in the NBA.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Better than Vonleh or Kornet?

Seriously, what has Kornet done to get any respect?   or proven?

I think a lot of the guys on this list could still outplay him but Luke is a better team mate and locker room guy.

He better play well tonight......Vonleh has played well

Perfect for what?  I see him as a useful, versatile bench player.  The classic PF/wing swing player.  Not even a natural PF.  He has not been a regular starter since 2018/19 in Indy.  Career 33% 3pt.

He is definitely a solid useful depth player.  I would love to have him on our bench.  Love having that kind of versatility and consistency in a bench player.  Sounds like a good fit in terms of leadership also.  But I don't see him as a "perfect 4".  He was always a "tweener" but in spite of that has had a very solid NBA career.

He's really more of a 4/5 these days. Really good passer, versatile defender, and can hit 3s on occasion. I always thought he would have been the perfect guy to sub in for Al.

So ............ what's the process for jumping on Favors' availability and signing the guy.
We need additional size and rebounding in the worst way.
The Four Celtic Generals:
Russell - Cowens - Bird - Garnett

The Four Celtic Lieutenants:
