What's most striking to me is how he seemingly mellowed in his feelings towards Boston and the public perception of his career as a player in later years. Keeping in mind that he didn't want his number retired publicly by the Celtics, his refusal to attend his HOF induction and his general attitude towards Boston and its fans.
Over the past few years he allowed the NBA to honor his legacy, was active on social media and seemingly let the public into his life a little bit. You always heard plenty from him come Finals time which was more than appropriate since he was the greatest winner of all time in team sports.
He also seemed to not have any issue with reminding folks about how good he actually was. I think my favorite quote from him was when a reporter asked him how he would have dealt with Shaq (who at the time was in his prime). Russell's reply was 'I think a better question would be how would Shaq have dealt with me'.
