76ers New Stadium Proposal

Led by David Adelman, in partnership with Harris Blitzer Sports Entertainment (HBSE), the Development Corporation is pursuing a privately-funded, purpose-built sports and entertainment arena, 76 Place, that will be located on a portion of the current site of Fashion District Philadelphia and serve as an anchor to Center City.

The new, privately-funded arena is anticipated to cost approximately $1.3 billion. The arena will provide $1.9 billion in overall economic output during construction and $400 million annually upon opening to support Philadelphia's long-term economic growth and sustainability.

It's not going to be finished for another decade, so they'll have spent 35 years in their current location.

I went a couple of years ago just before Covid and remember the stadium being pretty nice. It does seem too soon to build another one, but Orlando opened Amway Arena to their new Magic team in 1989 and then opened Amway Center in 2010.

Yeah it wasn't in the thread, but they are finishing the lease on the current space so they won't be in the new space until the 31-32 season.

Currently, all four Philadelphia professional sports teams play in the same complex in South Philadelphia that has housed them for the past half-century. The 76ers, however, think breaking away from that tradition and building a downtown arena will provide fans with a much better experience.

"How many arenas have you been to in the urban core [of a city]? That's where the puck is going," Adelman said. "Right now, the sports complex in South Philly only has the Broad Street line, only one line. We've got every line.

"When you leave Wells Fargo Center, you can't go have a drink, you can't get something to eat. You have to go home, and you have to sit in this funnel to get into traffic. Right now, our fans are forced to leave like two minutes early, and we need to do something better. We need to give them this experience."

Been to a couple of games there, getting out didn't feel like a funnel to me.  Wells Fargo Center is at the corner of where 3 highways intersect (95, 76, 476).  My first time there, I remember thinking wow that was super easy getting on and off, because as soon as you get off the highway the Wells Fargo Center and all its parking lots are right there.

Maybe it's a suburbs vs city thing, because coming from the suburbs, super easy (also not going to get food/drinks before/after).
