I made it 3 minutes in without seeing him take a shot outside the paint.

Looks like a fun guy to watch.  Hope he develops.
Here’s a video where you go over a minute in and all you see is 3 point shots. https://www.google.com/search?q=jd+davison+highlights+youtibe&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:a799f4f5,vid:THnjYbe9Gsg,st:0

The shot looks fine and I bet he can make the wide open ones. I can find a video of the misses...

I like the form, nice and centered, even though it’s a little odd. From what I saw the release is consistent. Looks to me like he’s way better at catch and shoot. So if he’s going to get in an NBA rotation as a ballhandler, some more skill shooting it off the dribble would help.

Very quick with the dribble but always finishes right. Much prefers dribbling right, too. Has a nifty spin move at lightning speed where he fakes left and then reverses to get to his strong hand and finish righty. It’s very impressive but he needs to make the defender honor it both ways - otherwise it’s completely predictable. He simply won’t go left. But he simply has to improve his left hand.

Healthy numbers of assists and attacks the paint relentlessly.

There’s a lot to work with here. Great first step and balance, good NBA body at 19 years old. Hard to tell if his surprisingly good rebounding will translate to the next level; but it’s certainly an asset to have a ballhandler who can get a board and go - especially with his speed. Spring and acceleration. Didn’t see him playing defense much but it at least looks like he’s had some coaching. Great laterals and good anticipation.

'I was proud of Marcus Smart. He did a great job of keeping us together. He might not get credit for this game, but the pace that he played at, and his playcalling, some of the plays that he called were great. We obviously have to rely on him, so I’m definitely looking forward to Marcus leading this team in that role.' - Jaylen Brown, January 2021

STRENGTHS
Strong physical scoring point guard

Explosive high level athlete

Fast in the open floor; Quick first step

Aggressive; plays hard

Wired to score

Puts pressure on defenses with aggression

Moves w/o the ball understands spacing

Looks to run and get into paint on every possession

Good passing instincts; capable playmaker

AREAS TO IMPROVE | CONCERNS
Can be turnover prone

Tendency to play too fast and out of control

Streaky shooter

Often drives without a plan

Struggling with outside shooting early in freshman season

He also does that thing on defense that used to drive me crazy about Rozier in that he hunts rebounds instead of guarding his man.

Good stuff. TP. What I’m encouraged by is that all of his weaknesses can be improved by coaching and hard work. I’m excited for summer league. Didn’t think I would be.

On the whole, not a bad assessment. Love the idea of him as a lob target.

I think that the issue about his jump shot isn’t streakiness so much as that he’s weak shooting off the dribble. Thing is, as a ballhandler he HAS to develop a reliable repertoire off the dribble.

When his feet are set and he’s squared up, his form is super-consistent.

I could quibble about a couple of other things, but nothing that matters much.

Yeah, the weaknesses really seem to be largely due to a kid for the first time being on a court with equals or near-equals.  In high school he could do whatever he wanted because he was so far above the rest of the competition.  In college, he often could do whatever he wanted, but when he couldn’t, he got into trouble quickly.  Coaching, reps against higher competition, and a lot of film study are all answers to that, and all three of those are things the Celtics can better offer than college.  He’s far from a lock, but his mistakes are pretty correctable — the main drawback is that there are A LOT of mistakes!

No kidding. Theres a great espn video that has some one breaking down some of his highlights and low lights, its really good. But theres one clip were he gets the ball at the foul line and brings it up the court and dunks it, takes him 3 seconds to cover that distance.

He's a project, bit of a slow release, but still gets it off, and a lot of his turn overs were from trying to do to much and force things. If he learns when to and not to attack, this kid may have a spot in the league. I love how in the interview he said he likes to see his teammates have success.

I wish I could watch summer league, he's at least going to be fun to watch.

Maybe the JD Davison thread?

"I am excited to watch the #Celtics summer league team next week. Trevion Williams,  Jordan Bone, Kabengale, Sam Hauser, Juwan Morgan

JD Davison might be their 6th or 7th best player…"

I'll be curious to see what type of contract we sign him to.

Ideally, he takes a 2-way for a year or two, and then we can lock him up with a four year MLE deal right at the minimum.

Is the only way to get a guy playing in GLeague games to sign him to a 2-way deal?

No.  A player in his first two seasons can be sent to the G-League as much as his team likes, subject to the G-League team not having too many NBAers on its roster (I forget the limit, but I think it’s three).  So the Celtics could sign Davison to an NBA deal but leave him in Maine the entire season if they want.
