One note after watching the game is that once the refs swallowed the whistle, the Celtics would go on runs. Overall the refs were bad and there were some bad calls on both sides, more so in favor of the Bucks but they were inconsistent. However, once they let them play, the Celtics took over. In the 4th quarter, they could have called fouls on Smart but they didn’t and we got control of the game.

Credit to Bucks defense but I think if both teams can be physical and call consistently on both sides, then the advantage is on the Celtics.

Kinda funky box score...C's mostly had better stats on shooting and assists, but got outrebounded 48-38, and had more turnovers 11-7 and fewer steals 6-2.  My take: When they shoot well and play this kind of defense, they can overcome other deficiencies.
We played some pretty good defence for the most part, just got hurt by second chance points on cheap offensive boards sadly.

I think an underrated part of the game is when Tatum defended Giannis.  Tatum's length and lateral movement seemed to cause some problems for Giannis.  Smart also did a good job on Giannis for a couple of plays and made him give the ball up.

For the first 3 games, the defenders were primarily Horford and Grant Williams.  We then started to mix in Brown a bit.  Brown has not been successful in guarding Giannis, but I think we should be rotating more than 2 guys on him to give him different looks.  Smart and Tatum seem to be good options for this approach.

It wasn’t really the offensive rebounds the Bucks were getting that was the problem.  It was more that we didn’t get enough.  The Bucks missed a ton of shots (55 plus free throws), so they had at least 56 offensive rebound opportunities.  They got 23% of those opportunities, which is a below-average number.  We only came up with about 10% of our offensive boards, which was really the source of the rebound disparity.

The lineup with Tatum at the power forward surrounded by shooters did the trick.

Horford was a freakin monster!!! I’d say he’s a better player than Kemba Walker lol

And man, I loved the lack of calls down the stretch. When the game isn’t getting called tight, C’s have an advantage because they don’t really have guys who are great at drawing the whistle and the Bucks need the threat of the line to be able to get where they want. I’m glad refs let them play. I was surprised actually that it happened given how the game was being called up to that point.

Also, Ime continues to impress. Nice defensive adjustment in the 4th and trying to get Smart onto Giannis was a great call. But all that defense goes to waste if C’s don’t get it done on offense. Horford was obviously great. But Tatum (and Smart) playing bully ball is some of what the C’s really need. Tatum must’ve bowled over guys twice or thrice in that crucial stretch, with one resulting in an and-1

I just read through the entire thread from start to finish…it’s so funny reading the comments go from wrist slitting to hopeful, then exultant in the end. Kind of gives me a small feeling of what w roller coaster of emotions it was like for you guys watching it live  :police:

That is what I was saying. When the refs swallowed the whistle, we made runs. It's not that we were playing dirty, I think it's more that when they let the players be aggressive on both sides, then we were able to really play. I don't think Marcus Smart would have been able to bully his way up at the end of the 4th quarter in the beginning of the game. All I ask is for the refs to be consistent.

Haha the Celtics are winning.

I think there are about 20 posters here that should self-regulate and avoid any more embarrassing knee jerk reactions until the end of the game.

Let's go Celtics!

You mean the game doesn't end after 1 quarter?

Reading the game thread through for the first time since I watched the game late, it is funny to see how much panic there was after one bad quarter. It’s just a reflection of how bad we want the team to win

This team has been resilient since the new year, they have heart. As long as people were happy at the end that’s what counts  :police:

Really hoping we're done with Fosters, Brothers and Zarba the rest of the way this series.

The C's are a better team, and we saw what happens when the refs let them play and don't give MIL every single call (look at how the 4th quarter played out). Even Game 3 despite all that, the C's only lost by two in a game Tatum shot 4-19 for 10 total points

Have read every post in this thread.

You would think the Celtics were down by 20 if you weren't watching the game and just reading this thread.

I’m reading the whole thread right now ans trying to match the comments to the points in the game since I didn’t see the game live..li was trying to work out the point in the 1st half where the angst was greatest, I think it was when we were down by 5?  ??? Just goes to show how passionate CSers are I guess

I said it in the GDT but I couldn't watch most of Game 2 as I was volunteering, but I remember without checking the score just coming on a GDT and reading the comments. It sounded like we were down 10 as people were mad at a turnover but it was 30-12 C's lol and Jaylen was going off

Did anyone else notice Giannis not attacking when he had PP switched on him? I thought it was weird at the time. It happened maybe two or three times. I guess running a guy over who's a foot smaller might get called...

Funny you say that, since I had a similar thought early in the thread. Figured we were down 20. Of course, I should know by now.

I have a theory as to why this is, at least for us older folks: We also grew up as Red Sox fans, and there were always two things you could count on: 1) that the other shoe would eventually drop, and 2) when it did, it would hit us squarely in the head.

We’ve been permanently scarred.

Idk about the bolded. At no point was this game a blowout or did it feel like we couldn't win it, but posters were calling our season over in the 3rd quarter. Not the game, the actual season. To me, that's just quitting on the team and having a defeatist attitude, and it makes the game threads less enjoyable. If a 5 or 7 point Milwaukee run is going to push you over the edge that way every single time, maybe the games are too much for you to watch.
