And Grant Williams crying today led to a 3 from connington that ended up being the difference in the game. You can say a lot of things caused this loss, but that one sticks out because Ime called a timeout and got after Grant on that play.  He also brought it up in the press conference.

Again Tatum crying,  and playing soft. He isn't even trying to finish at the rim now....

He had so many chances to put this game away down the stretch , but was so passive....

I mean he had a lot of bad calls his way and Grant's.

True. I think the point was that crying doesn't really help, because it's not going to change the call and it distracts the player from what's happening and gets them frustrated. I get that they are human, but that's one of the things you're supposed to block out as a professional athlete - block out anything you can't control. The game still has to be played.

Something that bothers me more is missing open shots. Tatum wouldn't have scored in the open pool, not to mention basket.

The third quarter could not have been more of a disaster for Boston. The Celtics were outscored, 39-14, committed eight turnovers (six by Jayson Tatum!) and had only one assist. It would be hard to pick the worst moment for turnover-plagued Boston, but it might have been when Jaylen Brown was viciously stuffed at the rim by Bam Adebayo on a drive to the bucket.

“They out-toughed us, out-physicaled us,” said Celtic coach Ime Udoka. “I didn’t think we responded well on either end of the court. We got muscled around and lost our composure. They just came out and imposed their will . . . we all got caught up in officiating in that quarter.”

All true. All bad. All inexcusable, even with tired legs. The Celtics gripe to officials more than any team in recent memory and it’s a bad look for this good team.

Physicality is what catapulted the Heat to the NBA Finals two years ago, and nothing has changed, at least for the opening game. The Celtics are going to need to increase their toughness, stop screaming at the officials, and stay focused through these types of onslaughts, because they’re going to happen again.

“Of course [we need to be tougher],” Udoka said. “That was the message after the quick timeout at the start of the half. They were going to increase their physicality.

“It was a little disappointing that we got caught off guard as far as that. But simple cleanups. We reverted back [to bad habits] in the third quarter and it cost us.”

I just don't understand why these guys complain to the officials so much. I get why fans do it, we're sitting in our loungerooms yelling at the TV. I get occasionally getting mad when they get hacked, I'm sure it's annoying. But complaining isn't going to get a call reversed. Has a non-referral call ever been reversed in the NBA because a player complained?

I don’t mean to hijack the thread, but I feel a much larger problem is developing. The over-all body language and attitude of Jaylen Brown.

Careless is the way I’d best describe it. Careless shot selection, careless free throw attempts. Careless with his ball-handle, and worst of all defenders are now on to it. His attempts to get into the paint are being met with tip aways and near steals. His game is predictable and flat.

I understand that his overall personality is stoic, but of late he looks depressed and uncaring.

I looking for a major bounce back from Jaylen…

Yes….Tatum is crying too much, as he morphs into superstardom.

I've actually seen a ref reverse himself because Lebron complained. At least once if not twice.

My guess is they do it because they've  grown up seeing other stars doing it.  Complaining to refs is engrained in the game, which obviously sucks.  Lebron, Durant...  even our own beloved Pierce.  They basically complain on every drive.

Is there any benefit to it?  I guess in theory, it's lobbying, so that a guy might get future calls.  Similarly, if you create the narrative that you're constantly fouled, you rile the fan base up, you get national attention, and eventually, maybe the league issues some sort of directive to the officials to pay attention to contact on a certain player.

But ultimately, I think it's better to let the coaches do the lobbying, and for the players to get back on defense.  But, our team isn't alone.  Lots of guys complain, and lots get T'd up for doing it:

To be fair though I've never seen a superstar get fewer calls than Tatum. For all the driving he and jaylen did to get so few calls

Yet butler gets 18 free throws? That is absurd. There is no way we fouled butler that many times. Great he scored 40...but half from the FT line

this.

considering the contact they were whistling for in Butler's favor, Tatum and Brown would have had 4-6 more FTs each based on the same amount of contact being called for them.

Butler got fouled.... a lot. I had no issues with the officiating. Time to D up! Let's go Celtics!

Tatum shoots too many 3s.

He's at his best taking jumpers from the key or going to the basket.

Some of these guys just can't overcome their addiction to 3s, and that's what gets the team into trouble during games.
You could see that in replays of the last couple games against the Bucks.

In contrast, Iannis spends most of his time inside, going to the basket.

Pass for the best shot! Hang that up in the locker room, please.

I actually think Tatum has gotten much better about it lately, although not perfect. I think there were a lot of potential 'and ones' that he just kept on playing and there were some plays that he was just being aggressive instead of looking for contact. There was one play that he was whining about in that 3rd quarter.

Overall, I thought the officiating was pretty even. For the most part, they let them play and usually that favors the Celtics but not against this gritty Heat team. The Celtics just have to find a way to overcome it.

It's like Grant has decided he has become enough of a talented and important player that he now has the right to be a constant complainer which sometimes results in him not getting back to defend. Part of the new status he has earned. I have been surprised by this negative development because Williams has always been such a quality guy with such high basketball character who constantly reminds his teammates to "play the right way." Hopefully, this is a temporary trend for him that is corrected soon.

The problem is leaguewide. Tons of players whine after a make.
There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, 'All right, then, have it your way.'

You don't have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.

He's so talkative and expressive that his personality might make him more prone to whining than an introverted guy.  Unfortunately Tatum has set the example that whining is the thing to do.
