From another discussion about free agents on this site, I said the following:
I've always liked Otto Porter and while he wouldn't necessarily be a game changer, he would be a solid wing off the bench.  Currently he plays 21 min/game with GS under a one year $2.4M contract.  6'8" career .399% 3-pt shooter.
He may not be the piece that puts the Cs over the top but he would be a solid rotation player.

Otto Porter....If you rounded his career 3pt percentage to 40% you might have sold me on the idea.

Saddiq Bey would have fit so nicely here.  He'd be perfect fit at power forward position.

We also need to think long term finding a replacement for Al Horford, who is 35 years old.  Try to trade for a young 4/5 who can stretch and defend multiple positions.  Good luck!!

Jonathon Isaac would be cool. 6-11 long. Two way player.

He reminds me of Dave DeBusschere in terms of being a high impact player by doing all the little things. Or a Bobby Jones. Those type of elite glue guys who make everything around them work better.

Boston needs 1 more All Star level player.  Position doesn't matter as long as he can play with Tatum and Brown.

Marcus Smart has been All-Star level since the calendar turned to 2022.  I know that's hard for some people here to admit, but it's true.
which has nothing to do with my post
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

The issue is that he’s played 33 minutes total since January 1, 2020.  Not 33 games.  33 minutes.

I just wonder how he'll bounce back. It's been a long time since he's played.

Since I like to argue…. What guards have made the All-Star team at Marcus’ 2022 level of production?  Korver is the only one I can think of, and he was shooting over 50% from 3PT / .700 TS% while playing for a 1st place team when selected.

Out side top 25 (for me) and only because Al is getting older and GW might be looking at serious $ to resign.

John Collins and Gali for Al, White, GW.
Gives you lots of switching and more pick and roll.

Brogdon, McConnell and Turner for same Al, White, GW.
Gives you even more size.

He'd be awesome if healthy.  Would be great fit next to Rob long term.

I think we could use a couple of player types that have been mentioned:
- A shooter off the bench who isn't a liability on D
- An athletic, defensive PF/C who can at least hit a respectable % out to 20 feet.  if they can make 3's even better.

Harrison Barnes would be a very solid pickup but would prefer someone younger.  Porter would be ok - not as enamored with him.  John Collins - has the offensive skills but I find his defense lacking - not really sold on his ability to fit this switching D.  I would love to get Thad Young but he's getting long in the tooth and he's not exactly known for his outside shot.

bottom line, a star would be a great get if they fit.  The realistic get are experienced vets that can defend, hit a respectable % of their shots so that they can't be ignored on D and have a high BBIQ.

I am not going to bite on the "all star level" or not debate, too subjective, but my original point is that PG is not currently a position of need for the team, regardless of whether or not you feel Smart has been all star level.  Sure, you could make a list of PGs that would be upgrades, depending on how well they would mesh with the Jays, but I am not sure that would make the team all that much better.  Smart sure seems to be meshing pretty well with the Jays right now.

just because the C's overpaid for White doesn't mean those teams will.  Atlanta and Indy both say "no thanks"

The Celtics have the best record in the East since December 31st, so they're a first place team.  1st place teams sometimes get three All-Stars.  During that time, Smart has averaged 14/4/6 with a an assist-turnover ratio of nearly 3:1, on a 46/39/84 shooting line with a TS% of 60.  For offensive stats, you're right, that won't get you the All-Star game, and I'm not suggesting he'll ever make an all-star game because no one wants to see him injure Trae Young while he's diving for a loose ball in an exhibition.  But when you consider his top 3-5 defense on top of his legitimately very good offensive play, he's been as impactful as an All-star during the turnaround.

For perspective on his offense, here are the players with at least 59.5 TS% and a 25% assist percentage since NYE (minimum 10 games and 15 mpg for sample size reasons):

Jokic
Giannis
Sabonis
Durant
Embiid
Jrue Holiday
LeBron
Trae Young
Haliburton
Simons
Smart

Smart even has the #2 assist-turnover ratio of that group.  His offensive efficiency is approaching the elite players of the game this year, and yeah, he's playing at an all-star level.  Will he ever get voted to a game?  Not as long as traditional box score counting stats decide it.  But I don't think people realize how good his offense has been -- even I didn't know the company he was keeping until I responded to this post.
