Boston needs 1 more All Star level player. Position doesn't matter as long as he can play with Tatum and Brown.
Marcus Smart has been All-Star level since the calendar turned to 2022. I know that's hard for some people here to admit, but it's true.
Since I like to argue…. What guards have made the All-Star team at Marcus’ 2022 level of production? Korver is the only one I can think of, and he was shooting over 50% from 3PT / .700 TS% while playing for a 1st place team when selected.
The Celtics have the best record in the East since December 31st, so they're a first place team. 1st place teams sometimes get three All-Stars. During that time, Smart has averaged 14/4/6 with a an assist-turnover ratio of nearly 3:1, on a 46/39/84 shooting line with a TS% of 60. For offensive stats, you're right, that won't get you the All-Star game, and I'm not suggesting he'll ever make an all-star game because no one wants to see him injure Trae Young while he's diving for a loose ball in an exhibition. But when you consider his top 3-5 defense on top of his legitimately very good offensive play, he's been as impactful as an All-star during the turnaround.
For perspective on his offense, here are the players with at least 59.5 TS% and a 25% assist percentage since NYE (minimum 10 games and 15 mpg for sample size reasons):
Jokic
Giannis
Sabonis
Durant
Embiid
Jrue Holiday
LeBron
Trae Young
Haliburton
Simons
Smart
Smart even has the #2 assist-turnover ratio of that group. His offensive efficiency is approaching the elite players of the game this year, and yeah, he's playing at an all-star level. Will he ever get voted to a game? Not as long as traditional box score counting stats decide it. But I don't think people realize how good his offense has been -- even I didn't know the company he was keeping until I responded to this post.
