I'm 100 percent against Ray Allen getting his number retired. I think KG got caught up in the moment. I'm sure this has already been discussed but..No Way on Ray!

I think it's 50-50 on Ray. Pierce and KG have a good deal of pull on this and Ray was as much a key part of banner 18 as those two guys. His time on the Celtics was brief though, without even getting into him joining Miami.

I doubt it, given #20 has been used by 3 different players since he left.
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

If ever Ray is gonna get his number retired, I think Danny’s #44 should be way ahead of the conversation. That being said, I don’t think Ray gets his jersey retired.

Agreed. I always thought that starting five from '86 should have been retired. If Ainge had played in the 60's and made the same contributions, Red would have retired #44.  I wonder if Ainge, as GM, discouraged the idea of hanging his own number. Seems I remember him expressing the opinion that there were already too many numbers retired.

Danny next.

I’m fine with Ray.  I’m also fine if he doesn’t make it.

A few comps and yes/no on number retired:  Ainge (no), Tiny (no), Don Nelson (yes), Max (yes), Siegfried (no), Rondo (not yet), Chaney (no), DJ (yes).

I think Ray is on the cusp, I think Danny, Max, Tiny and Rondo are the best comps.  I couldn’t really care less, but if Ray gets it, I’d go with Danny (given his front office tenure), Tiny and Rondo.  I’m not a Rondo fan and generally would say no, but if Ray gets it I think Rondo should.  4 all-star appearances in green, I’m guessing no other Celtic did anything close to that and not had number retired.

I don’t think Ray should get his number retired, but I also didn’t think he’d make the top 15 list

Ray played 38 less regular season games than KG, but 7 more playoff games. And Ray actually played more regular season minutes by like 500 minutes.  I never really understood the notion that KG was a no brainer and Ray was an afterthought.  I personally wouldn't have retired either number, but since they retired KG, they probably should also retire Ray based on their own standards.

If you don’t understand the difference between what KG brought to this Celtics franchise and Ray, I don’t know what to tell you

He hates KG, so don't worry

I understand they arrived at the same time and the C's don't win a title without either one.  I also understand that the team was in the ECF winning 59% of its games in Ray's last season, to going to 41-40 and a 1st round loser KG's last season when Ray was in Miami.  The fan base has put the turn around pretty much solely at the feet of KG, when none of it happens without Ray.  In fact, KG doesn't even come to Boston without Ray being on the team.  Ray has always been considered an afterthought, when he wasn't.  Ray's shooting had a tremendous impact on the entire team.  They needed his elite shooting and floor spacing to really work offensively.  And Ray was Boston's best player in the Finals in 08.  His shooting that series has basically never been matched in a Finals from a key player.

Does Ray deserve it? Probably not.

Will I be upset if they do decide to retire his number?  No.

Yeah, Ray was a good player and a helpful piece in the championship puzzle, but KG was the definition of culture change. Ray also played one less season. I couldn't believe he made the top 15 - didn't think he should even sniff top 25. There were a number of players who could have played Ray's role in Boston, but there was only one KG.
