Apparently before he knew he was getting traded he went out clubbing night before trade deadline. Then did not get his opt in paperwork signed in time and will be a free agent this off-season. This guy really seems like he is going to have a bad backend of his career. Glad we didn’t get him the last year or two.

Did he miss the deadline, or did he want to become a free agent?  His best chance at a max contract is this off-season.

And agreed:  trading JB for Harden would have been a disaster.  I guess in theory we'd have Simmons, Curry and two #1s right now, but I'd still prefer Brown.

I think he can opt-in after the season, prior to hitting free agency, but yeah...

He allegedly sent the paper to opt in, but they arrived too late to be accepted. He still intends to opt in but maybe he changes his mind if he doesn’t get along with Embid or a doc (which is certainly possible considering he demanded two trades in the last 14 months or so. Can’t imagine Philly is happy with this because I believe it was a condition of the trade. Larger picture it is just another example that this guy loves partying. Just going out to the club when you are out injured unsure if you will be traded. Maybe was too hungover to get the papers in lol.

He can opt in for his last year and then sign a 4-year max extension that would pay him more than signing a 5-year max with Philly in free agency, so missing the deadline wouldn't be about getting top dollar.  The difference is small ($274.7 million over 5 years with the opt-in plus an extension vs. $269.9 million over 5 via free agency), but it favors opting in.

Watching the game tonight, coupled with these continued reports on harden, I think the 76ers may have made a franchise altering mistake not getting haliburton and keeping curry and Drummond and picks. Maybe harden and Embid will have perfect harmony and blow past the bucks, us, the heat and nets and then beat the sun or warriors but I just don’t see that happening.

I think Harden is a cancer and I'm very happy he is not a C.

I'm way more scared of BKN - they absolutely fleeced PHI in the deal...especially since Harden was likely walking in a couple of months.

I mean if Harden actually struggles or hits a roadblock in PHI and then opts-in, I wouldn't mind. PHI can keep him for 47M next year then lol.

Remember when Simmons was signed for that max contract, things were going well and then last year's playoffs happened leading to what's happened now? Morey worked his magic to get out of that situation but it could all become sour again if Harden doesn't end up having the impact the Sixers hope for.

I also wonder if Harden's actually in basketball shape, and I don't mean appearance wise. He seems to get hurt often or we hear that he's dealing with something even when playing. Is this something chronic or "annoying" that'll linger going forward?

I think long-run Brooklyn is better off, but I'm less concerned about them this season.  They've dug a big hole for themselves and the way the seedings are sorting out will:

1) Have to beat Toronto at home without Kyrie, or play a second game, also at home without Kyrie
2) Have to win at Toronto without Kyrie, or play a second game, at home without Kyre.
3) Drop down to 9, need to win two games, at least one of which will be without Kyrie.

Getting through the play-in, which won't be a cinch, leaves them as the 7 or 8 seed.  Not a fun 7 or 8 seed to play, but it's just plain harder to advance far in the playoffs from that position.

It seems unlikely they're going to climb back into the top 6.  There's too little time, and Durant is still weeks away from returning.

Philly had to go all in on Embiid with his health they can't be sure how long the window will be open.

There's no way somebody's going to give this guy $50m+ per year for the next five years, is there? Is he in the position to say to Philly, "Promise me the max 4-year extension in August or I'm not resigning?"

I'm sure he will resign but if they lose some games, go in as the 6-7 seed and get bounced quickly in the 1st round maybe Harden looks at all of his options vs just resigning with Philly.  This deal could quickly becomes a disaster and franchise altering trade.  If that happens and they can't get Embiid help then they are in trouble.

Yeah, I think he is.  A lot of teams have targeted 2023 free agency as the year for cap space.  He'll have suitors.  On top of that, $50 million a year is crazy, but it's less crazy when you realize that midway through the deal the NBA is likely to get a new media rights deal triple the value of the old one, and Harden's salaries could be lower than the 35% max salary in the final two years if the cap raises in kind.  The salary cap itself could be in excess of $170 million.  Harden making $58 million that year would be insane, but also not something that completely hinders what a team could do.
