First school is Brad and Ime want as many tough, hard nose Defenders that can shoot, pass, handle,  and drive.

Second school of thought is Derrick White makes Marcus Smart expendable as they both have similar games.

A Smart trade could bring this team another piece that would make us a more complete team. I'm all ears to hearing who we could trade Smart and or Horford for that makes this team better now.

With the positive response to Collins in the other thread I'm going to propose this trade I'm all ears to other ideas as well.

Horford and Smart for Collins and Bodonavich Celtics would obviously add some draft compensation here.

Does this make our team better? Why or why not

Timelord/Theis
Collins
Tatum /Grant
Brown /Bodon
White/Prichard

It's a really rock solid starting five with three very good shooters of the bench.

It's hard to say which way the team will go.  Marcus' name came up in a lot of rumors this year, which could be a sign that the team is willing to listen, or it could just mean that other teams like him.

I'd gladly move Horford and Smart for Collins and Bogdonavic, but plenty of folks will disagree.

We'd have to add at least 2 first round pick,. Which I would do!

I’d rather trade Horford and picks for Collins and nix the Smart/Bogdanovic part of the deal.

The point of the deal from Atlanta's perspective would be to get Smart, and clear Bogs' contract.

I see a fair number of TV feeds from our opponents, and Smart's considered one of the elite defenders in the game (and a lousy shooter). White's good defensively, but he's a more stable PG (and a better shooter than Smart if you look at his career numbers), which I think is why he's here and why he was finishing the game in his very first Celtics appearance last night. Both are advanced stats darlings.

Everyone other than Tatum and Brown is a trade candidate though.

BTW, the DEN post-game show said that the Nuggets lost because of Cs' physicality which resulted in Jokic and DEN taking a lot more 3s than usual last night.

Where are we going to get a back up PG, because PP isn’t it?  Anyway, we’d be weakening one position to strengthen another.

White plays both guard spots.

I'd say best plan of action right now is replace Horford (plus picks) with a 3rd star to play next to the Jays. This star could theoretically play PG, SG, SF or PF due to the versatility of both the Jays and also Smart & White who can play both guard spots. This means that most likely one of Smart & White will come off the bench and one will start.

A starting lineup that has both Smart & White in it with the Jays at forward means we did not land a star for Horford + picks or that we had to trade Rob Williams as well in order to get a star center (say Towns).

Im referring to if we traded smart.  And we only have one White.

I always thought that when you use the 2 schools of thought discussion it pertained to opposite points of view. Like school of thought 1 was "up" and school of thought 2 was "down".

This discussion is more like school of thought 1 is "up" and school of thought 2 is "some chickens are roosters".

I'm confused. Can't both of these schools of thought be true and both happening simultaneously?

To Smart or not to Smart that is the question.

 My guess is to Smart.

I'd 100% keep Smart.

Without him, the next option is PP at the moment.

To be honest, I don't think we could get anything BETTER than Smart in a trade.

I don't see anyone out there that could do the same insane stuff he does. Play as gritty, dive after every ball, force turnovers, and get the insane defensive stats he gets.

On top of that he's been doing great at point over the past few games, and his shot is finally falling again.

I'm happy to keep him.

I don’t find it impossible Marcus is traded, but I also don’t find it terribly likely.  A lot will depend how this season finishes out, of course.  If this hot streak ends and we tumble back to the 7th or 8th spot, despite being healthy, maybe Smart is moved (although I think Jaylen would be the top candidate because he can bring more in return).  But if they finish on this pace and get to the 2nd round or better, I don’t anticipate a rotation player being moved outside of maybe Al.

Next year the Celtics have their entire top 8 currently under contract, with only Al being partially non-guaranteed.  If they come to an agreement with Horford where he’s released and resigned at a lower number (say $4 million a year for 3 years, which brings him back to the $26.5 million he’s owed next season), they’ll be under the tax with their top 8 in tact and 10 players under contract.  Their biggest need is a wing shooter.  They also have a $17.1 million TPE.  Assuming a positive finish this year, I think ownership will be willing to spend a little into the tax, because this deadline was full of moves that added long-term salary.  I don’t think Stevens/Zarren add someone like Theis at the deadline if they’ve been told that the luxury tax is off the table next year.  And so I think a) they will finish the year strong and b) use the TPE to add a wing shooter to the current core, and wind up $7-10 million over the tax line.

Celtics 2021, can you explain this a bit more?  Did you mean $14 million a year for 3 years?
