I graded today as a D ... but if Smart and Horford are going to Atlanta for John Collins (and more) ... then I will change to A

D - don't mind the Schroeder trade but the Derrick White trade was a drastic overpay.

That 2028 swap could destroy our future. If (when) Tatum leaves we are a potential lottery team

A

The Cs got much better. And got under the luxury tax. Got rid of dead weight (Kanter, Langford, Fernando, Schroder) and sold high on Richardson for a good two way combo guard signed under contract long term. Theis provides good big man depth and Kanter is useless defensively so Horford can get a breather.

Cs fan are hilarious. The last few years, everyone has been upset about not including late 1st rounders and Trader Brad just throwing them around to make deals. Cs have numerous tradeable contracts for the offseason as well.

Today was a good day.

Still need the details on the pick swap in the White deal. Hopefully the pick swap is only if this year’s pick doesn’t materialize, rather than additional. So that’s an incomplete from me for now.

The Orlando trade is an A. No-brainer.

I give the Theis trade an A-. Love Theis and think he’s a great fit here. Think he’s a good pickup for our unplayable bench bigs and Schroeder who is redundant now with Smart, White, and PP. It also gives us much more ability to trade Al this summer for a third star.

The main question from this trade is the empty roster spots and slightly lopsided roster now. But definitely think we’re a better team this year.

Sounds like they overpaid a bit for White so my guess is that Ime asked for him and made his case to Brad to do what it took to get him. Do we have faith in our braintrust?
We shall see.

It's not an overpay if he's the right fit.

I said B because the only long term value that went out was the 2022 draft pick.   (It will drop if the pick swap is ever confirmed)

I think White is an upgrade over Schroder and Theis is an upgrade over Kanter.

Overall - B

Not because I don't like what we did. This team is legitimately better today than they were yesterday. Their top 8 rotation is better. They are better prepared for a playoff push and they ducked the tax. That's a needle I didn't think Brad would be able to thread.

A ratings are reserved for trades where you absolutely steal a good player or pick from another team. I think Brad gave good value today, but I also think he had recovered value since he took over. He was playing with house money with Richardson because they rehabbed his value.

I would have loved one more player in our top rotation. I would have loved one more shooter, or situational defender. But maybe we still get that on the buyout market.

I don't get this.  Why is everyone assuming SA will be good in 2028? Pop will be gone and they have only 1 top 25 player on their roster now. The Cs will at least will have a good chance of have 2 all star wings in their mid to late primes.

To me, it just seems like a completely unnecessary add. What if San Antonio is good in 2028? They draft well and they develop from within. It could very well be irrelevant but it's gambling on the future when we have no clue how either team might be by then.
I think the trade would have still gotten done without it. In my mind it would have still been an overpay without it.

F -- the pick swap in 2028 is irresponsible and a gross overpay versus what is coming back. That overrides all else.

I like Derrick White. He is a good player and good addition to the team albeit not necessarily what we needed. Theis gives us a backup C to keep Horford as a starting PF; again good but not necessarily what we needed.

I am happy with the value going out relative to the value coming in with the exception of that way-down-the-road future pick swap which could be anything.

This is how you end up in situations like how Vancouver/Memphis lost the #2 pick in one of the greatest draft classes of All-Time with LeBron, Darko, Melo, Bosh & Wade going top 5. That was a future pick for an old Otis Thorpe who (like D-White) was a role player / glue guy at that point in his career.

Wait so a 2028 pick is the only thing people are mad about?

I voted B. If that's all we're mad about then legit - whatever. Must be good.

The pick swap probably less valuable than a 2nd round pick because of the lack of certainty associated with the swap.  Would you have the same issues if it was 2nd round pick instead of a swap?

White is a better player than JRich and Romeo was needed for salary match.  Stevens, when asked in interviews, been consistently higher on Nesmith than Romeo, and the Cs have 1 more year of cost control with Nesmith.  A late first is the cost of upgrading JRich to White.
