This either means we aren’t doing anything or, as it often the case, a trade will surprise us all.

In other words, I have no idea.

at this point, I don't think there will be a deal other than something small to address the cap issues

I don't think there is any real ambition or urgency in this front office to do anything. That worries me.

We should be pushing hard for an all-in type move -- scrounging together our mediocre assets for a want-away 3rd star.

They've been making money hand over fist for a long time. Time to pony up!

For what it’s worth, sounds like the recent hot streak has at least somewhat changed the mindset heading into the deadline. I’m not expecting much, as I don’t think there’s any major splash that makes sense right now compared to summer. Probably get under the tax line for sure, though picking up another bench shooting piece would be super helpful for us for this year.

But some one has to want our mediocre players to get that done.

Maybe it's just me, but "no ambition or urgency" seems like a line that very succinctly describes Brad Steven's as a Celtics coach for the last few years.

It's all nice little police "it'll be fine well work it out".  I hope his GM mentality doesn't go the same way.  Don't get me wrong, Danny was far from a regular big move maker - but at lest with Danny I kinda always felt like he had a reason for doing what he was doing (and part of that may have been the need to have lopsided wins in every deal).

With Brad I just can't see a lot of logical cohesion in the totality of moves he's made.  It seems randomised all over the place like "a duck's breakfast".

I remember this...not one rumor of substance for the Celts.

And suddenly, Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson were traded for Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic, ending ubuntu and the legendary motto of 2008-2010 "we have never lost a single playoff series with that starting 5"

I think something small will happen. Maybe Marcus Smart or G. Will goes. We will see though.

Of course, as is true with everyone, I have no idea the degree of intensity with which Brad is seeking a move prior to deadline.  I have no guesses as to what may be brewing or what may pop up.

I do think that if Marcus is involved that it isn’t something small. I believe Smart has good value in the league and definitely don’t agree with those who think he is overpaid.  Guy influences a game.  Unlike JRich who is a nice piece, Marcus could absolutely be the difference between a borderline contender and a champion. And if Cs trade him it will be for a significant return.

There are a few strategies that you can take at the trade deadline.

First, if you are a team that feels you have a shot at a title or a deep playoff run, you might go all in on a veteran that you feel is the one piece needed to get you over the top.  Maybe you give up a good young player or a valuable pick but you get back a solid vet for a short term fix (rental).

Second, you can do what Portland is doing, full reset.  Everything goes but one or two key pieces (if that).

And finally, what the vast majority of the teams do, you tinker with the team to fill a need or to manage cap but don't do anything that is a long term negative for the team.

Some bigger deals that are not "all in" type or "full rebuild" type do get done but more often those intermediate deals get done in the off season.

Do people really want to the Celtics to go "all in" on some vet rental that may or may not help them win even one play off series?  Do you really want to Celtics to go nuclear and trade everyone not named Tatum or Brown?  I think they are doing exactly the right thing.  Stay the course.  This team has a good solid foundation do no need to blow it up and we also aren't quite a the point where a key vet rental is going to make a difference.

I get the feeling we are going to be the kid looking at all the nice presents in the store window and that gets nothing.

We don't have a ton of solid options in terms of assets that won't weaken our team.

Teams know we're trying to get under the cap and have leverage.

We've won some recently but is that real?   Definitely playing better but we're one you know what from disaster with an eight man rotation.

The Laker's offer for Richardson is laughable, so is TOR trying to get Rob.

Multiple mediocre assets are worth multiple mediocre assets or a single mediocre asset.  Piling them together doesn’t make them more valuable.

I suspect we'll only see a very small move to get under the luxury tax.

But, the lack of chatter doesn't necessarily mean a lot.  Perhaps the biggest "gut punch" trade of all-time -- the Perk trade -- wasn't rumored at all, and came in about 30 seconds before the deadline.

Ainge made a mistake precisely because he is aggressive.  I don't see Brad having that type of personality and Brad was very recently a coach so I think he understands how disruptive a big mid-season trade could be.  Remember the old saying, "The best trades are sometimes the ones you don't make."

Comments about "no ambitions or urgency" are completely speculative on the part of ordinary fans.
