For the rest of the season...

Ime runs an 8 man rotation, if anyone were to go down we would be extremely thin.

To me keeping Schroder for the rest of the season, knowing full well he is walking at the end of it, is worth far more than the second round pick return we would get for him.

I just don't see the reason to give him up, especially if its to a team we have a high probability of facing during the playoffs.

Because he doesn't fit well with the other players.

He has his great games because he has talent.   But if his shot isn't falling, he doesn't add anything else to the team because of fit.   And there is no long term way to keep him.

So move him out and let us see if Pritchard can fill that role.   We have seen enough flashed to let him earn that position going forward.

I'm not so sure Schroder is walking at the end of the year.  I don't think there are going to be many suitors at more than the MLE and many of those will be limited to the tax payer MLE which is less than what Boston can offer.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah

Just read that flipping Fernando and PJ gets us under the tax line.

Only one of those two will be required if Jaylen doesn't make the all-star team..

I was pro-trading Schroeder, let the kids develop.

Now that we are playing cohesively, and Schroeder is reliable scorer off the bench, and his trade value is at best a 2nd round pick, am in agreement with OP that we should not trade him.

based on how he's played in his limited minutes lately, Pritchard isn't showing he's good enough to be our back up PG let alone our starting PG if Smart misses any games.   Couldn't break a press against Detroit.  still having issues getting the offense running when he's in lately.  I have hopes he can still become a useful player but this season has really been a step backwards for him

It is very odd that because of All-Star incentives, you can't know whether or not you are under tax by the deadline. At the very least, the NBA should make it not count against your cap if your player isn't voted in, but then is later added as a replacement. It is only fair.

Anyway, I generally agree with Moranis. It may be very possible to keep Schroder - and you'd have to keep him at that price - but both sides would need to buy into a more defined role moving forward.

Due to Pritchard only getting spot/garbage minutes, I don't think a true assessment can be made on him this season. I am not saying he is the next big thing, but he at least has a track record of being able to contribute in NBA games and absolutely dominate non-NBA ones.

Trade him because at this time next year we want to have an affordable and reliable backup PG in Pritchard.

If the 8th man on our team is the key difference maker, then there are larger issues.

This tight 8 man rotation is looking really strong.  No holes defensively.  And now that we're not playing Smart and Schroeder on the floor at the same time, our offensive spacing has been improved.

Schroeder is one of the best backup point guards in the league.  If we can get a real asset in return, it might make me think about it, but otherwise I'm inclined to ride this out and see where this goes and enjoy.

I don't see any reason to trade Schroder just to trade him.  The team will be worse this season if we trade him for a second round pick, Pritchard is not as good.  Pritchard has had plenty of playing time this year to allow for development (12.1 min/gm, 44 games, 532 total min).  Trading Schroder is not going to make Pritchard better.  A second round pick is nothing.  They can be purchased in the off season.

Now if we can get something back for Schroder that will help us this season and beyond, a PF or something like that, then fine.  We take a little step back at the back up PG but hopefully get better somewhere else, that makes sense.  But if we trade Schroder to essentially just get under the cap, I will be very disappointed.

The development that will occur for Tatum, Brown, Smart, Williams from playing better in the playoffs is more important than force feeding minutes to Pritchard in the hopes that maybe he develops.  That would be completely the wrong reason to trade someone.

Agreed.

This is a matter of competence. The arguments for developing Pritchard were always there. Stevens was able to get Schroder because he had almost no trade value. Cutting off Pritchard's development for most of this year just to be able to bag a 2nd later would have been stupid. Remember, when Stevens made this decision, Pritchard looked more important than he does now.

Schroder has been exactly what Stevens should have expected. I don't agree with the decision, but Stevens decided Schroder the player was worth wasting Pritchard for.  Schroder the asset wasn't worth it.

Schroder should only be traded to facilitate something bigger.

At this point, I expect that to Wyc, the revenue of advancing in the playoffs is worth more than a second rounder, so even without other considerations, they'd keep him.

But, with it looking more likely that we can keep him long term, there's no real reason to trade him.  Just dump Bruno or one of the other bench dudes.

Does it count if Brown named as injury replacement?  I have heard conflicting reports.
