I trade whoever they want, except Tatum, for Sabonis

Agree.

We lack the major draft pick to get it done without another bigger piece. I wonder if Rob Williams would do as that bigger piece. So Rob Williams, cap makeweight + two 1sts for D.Sabonis.

I would do that in a heartbeat.

Getting Sabonis is my wet dream at this point.

If we could move Al, Nesmith and or Langford plus two 1st's that would put us in the contention for years to come.

think about it, we would have some of the best contracts in league in Jaylen, Jason, Smart, Sabonis and Timelord.

I would have no problem giving out 1st rounders for the next couple of years.

I agree with all of that except Smart.

At >$15M for a role player, I wouldn't consider that anything close to a good contract.

With the season he is having and reasonable contract, I don’t want to trade Rob Williams.

I love Williams, but Sabonis is a 25 year old two-time all star who is a far better overall player to Williams, and he's making a very reasonable $19M a year.  That's just a clear win for Boston.

He didn’t finish top-40 in all star voting this year and nobody thinks he’s going to be added as a reserve.

Considering team fit, I’d rather have Rob. We might score more but we’d have to; Sabonis is a minus defender who would force us to change our whole scheme to hide him.

He most certainly is not.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

I think they need Robert Williams from the C's and frankly I'd rather trade them Smart than Horford.

Smart, Williams, 22 1st for Sabonis works.  Could also add in McConnell and Schroder if they want to move off his contract and then Boston gets a long term back-up/spot starter in McConnell.  Either way Boston does add some salary this year, but I think that is a cleaner trade that makes more sense.   Can still move Horford as well if the aim is to drop salary.

Don't like this deal at all.

1) I don't like Sabonis' fit with Tatum. I'd much rather have a shifty PG who can push pace, not a Point Forward who needs halfcourt offense to run through him.

2) Sabonis and Williams are a poor fit, and I can think of zero reasons to trade the latter.

The original idea was to trade Horford and picks for Sabonis.  He’d play well next to Rob.  Not to say there wouldn’t be a defensive hit, but Williams has shown he can play in two-big lineups because of his ability to defend inside and out, and some of what is given up in rim protection could be made back by Sabonis’ elite defensive rebounding to help keep possessions down to own shot.  Offensively Sabonis and a Horford are very similar, except Sabonis is so much better at it all at this point in their respective careers.

All that said, I would not do the trade if it included Rob.  Replacing Horford with Sabonis is the point — failing that, we shouldn’t get involved.

I 100% agree with this. I'm not sold on Williams and Sabonis together (or Tatum and Sabonis together), but I'm out when the deal moves to including Rob.

Then you almost certainly don't upgrade talent to Sabonis

And I'm fine with that. I want to keep RW III.

You're assuming Sabonis is a talent upgrade. I can understand why -- I just don't see it that way.

There's also the other dimension to all this - the fact that Rob Williams is a walking injury and has so far averaged 38 games per season over the past three seasons.  Sabonis has averaged almost double that at 66 games over the past three seasons.

Doesn't matter how good your player is if you can't depend on them to be suited up when the playoffs come around.  Just ask the Lakers (AD) and Clippers (CP3+Griffin).

I like Rob Williams a LOT.  If we could confidently depend on him to give us at least around 65 games per season and be suited up when we need him most in the playoffs, then I could understand the argument.  But a Sabonis on the court in a Celtics jeresey is far more helpful then a Rob Williams sitting at the end of the bench in a suit twirling a towel.

Yup,  easy to come up with trades that you like, but unfortunately everyone has to recognize what is likely not just what you like.  Put yourselves in the shoes of C's management.  I'm convinced they are committed to the core-4 starters, for this season anyway.
