Apparently, play-in games currently count neither for playoff or regular season points. If they did, Lebron broke the record against Portland.
I mean this is the downside for all this tinkering in pro sports for more money. All nfl single season records have become meaningless cause they play an extra game. The all time home run playoff hitters are all screwed up because of the double wild card and longer series. The nba has all best of seven series when it used to be best of 5 (and previously one less round). Kind of a downside a lot of people don’t care about. At least won’t be 82 game season that has been fairly consistent. Keeps some semblance of historical comparison (which is why I will give Lebron his due when he gets the regular season mark and not this weird hybrid record that espn didn’t even initially recognize).
This isn’t anything new though, people for some reasons just pretend these variances don’t exist when it comes to these records.
The mlb only played 154 games til like the mid 50s and then expanded to 162. That means Roger Maris had almost 10 more games to break Ruths 60 home run record. This makes his accomplishment much more impressive than Maris’ and even Bonds for that matter but this almost never came up in discussion when this record got so much publicity back in the 90s
Baseball actually had an asterisks next to Maris until 1991 because of the games discrepancy. Either way Bonds tied and passed Ruth in the 143rd game of the season in 2001 (9.9.01 he hit 3 in the game against th0e Rockies) so he did pass him in less games than Babe.
