Celtics show trade interest in Jeff Green, Jalen Smith, doing ‘due diligence’ on several players (report)
Updated: Jan. 12, 2022, 10:11 a.m. | Published: Jan. 12, 2022, 10:11 a.m. Mass Live

While I like Smith it doesn't make much sense either because if he does well he will be gone for a higher salary then The C's can offer.

Smith, a former lottery pick is a more intriguing name due to his youth. However, the Suns declined a team rookie option on him before the season, which means any team he is traded to can only offer him a maximum of $4.7 million to re-sign in the offseason. Otherwise, he’s an unrestricted free agent. The Celtics would be putting themselves at risk by acquiring Smith of losing him for nothing in that scenario if he ends up having a breakout second half of the year, something he has shown flashes of in Phoenix during the last month. Weighing the risk and reward of that possibility will surely bring down what Brad Stevens and other general managers around the league are willing to offer for the 6-foot-10 big man.

No, but they could sign him to a deal that would have paid him up to what he’d have made had his option been picked up, which is nearly $4.7 million.  It’s not likely he’d get a bigger offer than that in free agency.

Of they can use an exception or cap space.

Not a bad risk proposition. Kind of reminds me of the Lakers giving up on Ivicia Zubac and the Clippers snatching him up for nothing.

Made the most out of his opportunity against the Clippers this year.

Jalen Smith was a decent prospect the year he came out and was projected to be available in our range the year we took Nesmith, wouldn't doubt that Brad and Danny scouted him heavily., think I actually had us taking him in the draft challenge IIRC.

If he could develop into something like a Bobby Portis type that could be valuable piece for this roster. Given Robert Williams' health concerns over the years he would be at the very least a good fall back option for Timelord's off nights.

thanks for an interesting thread and background on smith. i dont see any reason to not take chance on him. maybe the celtics can make a reclaimation project out of him given his physical talent and young age.

i dont see much risk here at all. if he has a great 2nd half and is cheap, the celtics win. if he doesnt pan out then the costs was minor. i dont see how the celtics really lose much of anything by taking a flier on him.

I don't think the team can.  The rule is in place to avoid circumventing the rookie scale, I believe.

Jalen Smith is 19 pts/13 rebs per 36, all star potential!

Seriously though, he was a decent prospect coming out of college.  NBA size/body.  Only 21 years old.  Not sure he would move the needle much for us, at least not this season.  PF is a position of need so if the scouts feel there could be something there, why not?

Haven’t watched Smith play much for the Suns but I wasn’t a fan of his coming out of the draft. His high hips and lack of lower body strength projected to make him a defensive liability

He looked really good when he stepped into the lineup while Ayton was out.  Put up 16/10 over 6 games on 55/39/86 shooting splits, with a +50 while the Suns went 4-2.  I also wasn’t a fan, at least not as a lottery pick, and the Suns seemed to regret their pick quickly, declining his option after a year.  But he’s looked good the past couple of weeks, although in a 5 role rather than a 4, so I’m not sure how he’d fit here.

He'd take Freedom's minutes and I would not mind that at all.  He can stretch the floor better and can still rebound.  In 20MPG in January he's averaging 3.6 ORB per game.  Rob Averages 3.8 in 12 more MPG then this kid.  I think they would be a great tandem at C and you can play them a few minutes together.  Not sure his D potential but it has to be better then Freedoms and I'm sure the better he plays he can take some of Als minutes as well.  Not sure what they'd want but a straight up deal of Dennis for this kids works and the C's save money as well.
