Boston Receives:
Terrence Ross

Magic Receives:
Dennis Schroder
2nd round pick
Thompson TPE

We will receive a much needed scoring off the bench for 2 years while Magic have more chance to roll the dice for 2nd round and get a much needed PG depth

Orlando has too many PGs as it is, doubt they want Schroeder
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin

None of them are available at this point, at least their building blocks.

This isn’t how TPE’s work.

Danny still had to send Teague in the Fournier transaction. If the Thompson TPE won't do, we can use the Fournier TPE if the push comes to shove.

No. You can’t add a TPE to other players to match salary.

From the Fournier trade

Quote
The Orlando Magic have completed a trade that sends guard Evan Fournier to the Boston Celtics in exchange for two second-round picks and Jeff Teague, whom the Magic said will not report to the team and subsequently creates a $17 million trade exception.

I don't know how Danny pulled it out but Teague was included in that package with the Hayward TPE. Fournier TPE is around 17m. Terrence Ross is around 12.5m. Celtics accept more package separated from the TPE to match Schroder's salary

I don't know any CBA but I think the way it works is if you somehow trade a player with higher salary with someone with lower salary, the difference in salaries creates a TPE.

But you can't combine TPE in any package with other players. It must be traded by itself.

I might be completely wrong here though.

edit: nvm I quickly googled and I think I'm mistaken

Jeff Trague was on a minimum salary and as such, his salary doesn't have to count for salary matching purposes.

So Fournier was traded into the TPE the Celtics had from Hayward and Boston sent Trague and the 2nd rounders. Remember, a player needs to have his whole salary fit into a TPE in order to use the TPE in a deal.

So Orlando got A TPE that was the size of Fournier's contract, Teague, who because his salary was a minimum salary didn't need to be matched and 2 2nds. Boston got Fournier, so all salary matching was legal.

Make it T Ross for Schroder and Juancho plus a second rounder.  That works on NBA trade machine.

Having nothing to do with the proposed trade… can someone with expertise clarify: could a team like that Magic with cap space this summer agree to a FA deal framework with Denis as part of a trade? I presume not as it wouldn’t be an “extension”.

A sign-and-trade only works if the contract would fit both the original team and the new team, so he could only get the non-Bird amount in a S&T (roughly $7.2 million next year).

For what it’s worth, so few teams have cap space this year, I don’t think Schröder gets more than the MLE.

I think the trade would need to include another team willing to send draft picks for Schroder to be sent to the Magic.

First one comes to mind: the Knicks.
