Kemba seems to be struggling, and his minutes have been declining in NY. Losing the 16th pick stinks, but that was the cost to get off his deal, which would have been a huge drag on our team this season.
I don't get this line of thinking. So if you assume it was Kemba ($73.6M left on contract) + Pick 16 for nothing or I guess for a 2nd Round Pick, that means the rest of the deal was this:
Horford, Moses Brown (traded for Richardson, straight up, with TPE that was expiring)
for
2nd Round Pick
So we got Al Horford and Josh Richardson for a distant 2nd round pick. That is a pretty good deal. Those are going to be two really useful players for us. All for a nearly worthless second round pick. Nice.
I see the alternate to Horford ($26M) and Richardson ($12M) as Kemba ($37M), Fournier ($17M), and Sengun ($3M). $38M vs. $57M this season alone, Kemba can't play and a rookie isn't playing much. So spend $19M more to have Fournier likely off the bench. No thanks
There was also some discussion about Josh Richardson's player option. The option was for this season (2021-22) so yes, he would have had to pick it up before any trade. We then extended him. It may well have all been pre-discussed, I will pick up my option and let the trade happen but only if you give me another year. It actually makes sense as to why it was done so quickly and quietly.
