It's a gamble, but probably a decent one.  It's slightly over MLE money, for a guy who isn't all that far off from Jerome Jarrett Allen (5 years, $100 million)

Jerome Allen didn't make $100 million.  That's why he took the bribes.

There are probably incentives in this contract, similar to Embiid's first contract.

There might be some, but they won't be similar to Embiid's contract.  His incentives were based on the rookie-supermax, whereas TL is getting about one-third that amount.

Philly had opt outs and partial guarantees for Embiid if he got back or foot injuries that caused him to miss time. In theory, Celtics could do the same.

High risk/High reward.

It's either going to be a steal of a contract or another Hayward situation where he is injured 50% of the time.

If he can stay healthy this is a helluva deal for us, but that's a big if.

If he stayed healthy this year and continues to progress his game like we've seen and went into the open market we wouldn't have been able to afford him.

I like the move.

This feels like a pretty average risk for high reward.  This isn't comparable to the Hayward contract which was 3x more expensive per year, for a much smaller reward (Hayward didn't have the same potential as Rob)

This also gives the Celtics a very solid trade chip moving forward if he doesn't pan out, or gets injured.

Not saying there is zero risk, just that the risk reward ratio is extremely good for us.

Solid deal.  I thought the Celtics would wait until closer to training camp.  One thing that seems different between Ainge and Stevens is timing.  Ainge seemed to like to wait until the last minute to get deals done, but Stevens seems willing to make the deal happen if it's good enough.  We saw this in the Kemba trade (making it in June rather than waiting until the draft/free agency), getting the Smart extension done now rather than dragging negotiations to save a few million, and now Time Lord.  No judgment on which method is better, but it does seem to be a difference.

The key is both players (Smart and Timelord) will be trade eligible before the deadline. If Stevens had waited, they couldn't be potentially moved until next offseason.

So... #flexibility

Ha.  Jarrett Allen.

On a per-minute / per-possession basis, he outshines Allen almost across the board.  The big difference so far is durability, along with the ability to play without fouling.

Notably Smart hasn't actually signed his extension yet, and the trade deadline also hasn't been set, so it's unclear as to whether he actually will be trade eligible.  TL will be eligible because there isn't the same waiting period for rookie contract extensions, but his outgoing salary would still be ~$3.5 million, while his incoming salary would be closer to $11.5 million, so I'd say he's less of a midseason trade candidate now.

I'd feel better about this if he'd stop getting hurt so often. You're no good to a team if you can't stay on the court.
However Brad obviously believes in him.

Good signing. TIMELORD's only real issue has been health. If he's healthy this is a steal.

Tatum (23)
Williams (23)
Brown (24)
Smart (27)

is a decent core to build around moving forward. Keep tinkering around the edges and trying to add a third star. I like what Brad's done this offseason.

I'm surprised that they were able to agree on the number. $13.5 million per year would suck if he has a lot of injuries, but it would probably cost (only) one first rounder to dump it after a year or two. It also has the potential to be an absolute steal in 2 or 3 years' time
I'm bitter.

The Celtics didn't sign Hayward on potential because he was already a proven player.

Yeah, he was coming off an All-Star season. No one could've predicted we'd shell out $90m for a month and a half of All-Star level play.

Fair risk. He is a $20mil per year player if he gets healthy so $13.5mil is a good balance between risk / reward for both player and team. Fair contract.

Meh. In all honesty, I was hoping he'd be part of a blockbuster trade for Beal/Siakam/Simmons. It will be difficult to trade him now cause of the Base Year Compensation rule. Not sure whether he'll be eligible for trade at the deadline. The rules have changed due to the shortened season. Anyway, hopefully he stays healthy.

I'm intrigued to see how Udoka plans to use him next season. Brad was using him in a drop scheme on defense. Problem is, Tatum, Brown and Smart are at their best in a switch-heavy defensive scheme.

Our 2022 cap space has suddenly vanished. Not necessarily a bad thing. Just saying.
