It's crazy how talented the PG position is in the NBA right now.  Rozier averaged 20/4/4 last season on career high efficiency, enough to get him nearly $25M per year on his new deal... and he's below average as a starting point guard.

I'd rather pay Rozier that then Smart or Fournier what they got because Rozier is just a better player than both of those guys.

That said, none of them make a whole lot of sense for Boston.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

That's... a lot of money for Rozier.

I understand the Hornets are a small market team and have to overpay for talent, but they're paying Gordon and Rozier a combined $217m.

But good on Terry's agent for cashing in on a career year.
2021 Houston Rockets
PG: Kyrie Irving/Patty Mills/Jalen Brunson
SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo/Robert Covington
C: Kristaps Porzingis/Bobby Portis/James Wiseman

Good for Terry. Places like Charlotte have to overpay to get people there and keep them.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
$54M/yr for Hayward and Rozier is a lot of money. That's essentially what Tatum and Brown are being paid this year.

I like Rozier, but I just don't have him in that Jaylen-tier of players. Under a Smart-type contract, it makes a lot more sense. I understand that he has more impressive box scores, but I can't say with certainty that he is as impactful. And I am somebody who still think we overpaid Smart by a little (I liked the $68M contract better...obviously).

Smart has been a better player than Rozier his entire career if your goal is to actually win games. But 90% of NBA contracts come down to ppg. As expected, this will be the first of many contracts over the next several years that completely validates Smart at 4/77.

Good for Terry. Happy he took the money when it was on the table.

It will never stop being wild to me that a big chunk of the fan base saw a third-year guard step into major minutes for the first time late in the season, get the team to within a game of the Finals (against Lebron James), and come away with the conclusion that he had to go because he shot poorly in a game 7.

Isn't Rozier a better basketball player than Smart?

I give people more credit than that.  I think people thought he had to go because he and Morris effectively froze out players like Hayward and were playing for their next contract rather than to win games in their last year in Boston. Rozier then shot his way out of town with his interview at the end of the season. I also think most fans looked at Rozier as what he was not what he became in Charlotte. In Boston he was an inefficient offensive player. Good for him on getting better and getting paid. He's an Okay player on an Okay team.

You have to pay your players. You have to respect the market. Some fans are preoccupied with what other teams pay their players. Take care of your own players and stop trying to win con-tract negotiations.

Disagree, I bet he's p---ed that he's now lost a year of $20M.
