The press release says it was a sign and trade in exchange for cash considerations. So does “cash considerations” equate to a TPE? I am more surprised as to why the Knicks did this. They could have just signed Fournier outright, am I correct? This certainly is a weird S&T.

No, we got cash considerations because the Knicks have to send us something.  They can’t get Fournier and picks for nothing.  Otherwise it’s not a trade.

The Knicks did this because they get a second-round pick out of it.

  • Peace it's a board. We all will never agree.
Brad has done us great here. We now have 5 Trade exemptions we can get a player now without giving up a player. Time will tell but this season we have great opportunity at the trade deadline.

I think we’re only at three functional ones.  Theis ($5 million), Thompson ($9.7 million), and Fournier ($18 million? Not quite clear).

The rest are too small to absorb a player.

Thanks for clarifying.

Lauri or Larry Nance if you want to use it before the season starts...
First thing I thought of as well. Think Markkanen would be good fit.
We cannot make a sign and trade cause we have used the taxpayer MLE. Here's the exact quote from Larry Coon's CBA FAQ:

Quote from: Larry Coon's CBA FAQ
The team cannot receive a player in a sign-and-trade if they have used the Taxpayer Mid-Level exception (see question number 25) that season.

So it's another piece for next offseason? Thanks Jvalin
Really not sure what's the point in getting the TPE. Is Wyc willing to pay a hefty tax bill? If so, why didn't we just keep Fournier? I guess you are right. It must be for the next offseason.

Which player could fit into that $17M TPE who’s a better fit than Fournier? Can we for example trade for Markkanen using that TPE and just hope that he extends next year (since it can’t be a s&t as mentioned in a previous post)?

More like who is available that would be a better fit on this Celtics team? I think Lauri Markannen is worth it and we need a power forward.

So we send the Bulls some picks or players packaged with the TPE to acquire Lauri. However, since it can’t be a s&t as stated previously, we then risk losing Lauri for nothing next year if some team overpays for him?

Can't do a sign and trade since we used the tax MLE on Shroeder, so Markannen is out.

I can see the Celtics taking the general group they have now to training camp (minus Dunn maybe) with the assumption that they’ll determine what improvements can be made around the deadline.

I don't think we used the tax MLE, we used a portion of the regular MLE. I think at this stage its a matter of semantics

If we use the regular MLE then we are hard capped and can’t take on any salary regardless, right?

Would this help us acquire Beal without gutting the team?  For instance can you flip a player you just traded for with other players in a larger deal.  So if the C's trade for a player that has a salary of 18.7m in this trade in this exception then flip that player with Josh Richardson (11.6m) Aaron Nesmith, Grant Williams and 3 - 1st round picks for Beal at any point this season?  Can then also keep Smart in this scenario as well.  Bench leaves a lot to be desired but you can get some vet minimums with ring chasers.

PG - Smart - PP
SG - Beal - Schroeder
SF- Brown - Romeo
PF - Tatum - Jabari Parker
C - Horford - Rob Williams - Kanter

Sure, but you can't trade that player for 60 days.  So we would need to acquire him by early December.  But if the C's want to acquire Eric Gordon, for example, he and Richardson could match Beal's salary once they're both eligible to be traded.  I just don't think that is at all a likely way for the TPE to be used.  Next summer as part of a sign-and-trade seems much more likely.  It's a way to get someone on an $80 million free agency deal without having cap space, but it's not a plausible step to a third star unless the player you get becomes a star on his new deal.  For example, whichever of Aaron Gordan and Michael Porter Jr. Denver lets walk in free agency.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
So we basically traded a 2023 2nd (of which we have 3) for a $17.1M TPE. Not groundbreaking, but nice to see Stevens continue Ainge's creative ways. Maybe the common element here is Zarren since he is such an expert.

It'll be interesting to see if we use these TPEs...the TT one and this one (this one especially since we actually gave something up to get it). Obviously neither can bring in a superstar - unless they are on a rookie contract - but they could be very useful moving forward.
