Interesting that at the end of the day Celtics management valued Smart over Fournier. They both got about the same per season, and actually Fournier is for one less year (4th year team option).
Seems like a strong vote of defense over offense. Hope that they are correct. I still worry about lacking a third guy who can get buckets on his own.
Yes, I think this is the biggest takeaway from the signing -- Cs view Smart>Fournier.
As they should. He is better.
Glad to see you at least rate Smart over Fournier even though we have our disagreements about him as a player lol.
Smart's inability to not shoot the 3 frustrates me A LOT, but he is a very good defender, and respectable enough passer, rebounder, and ball handler to have real and significant value. If he shot 2 to 3 less 3's a game, his value would increase significantly. He will always be a role player, but he could be one of the best role players in the game if he just scaled back the shooting.
I'd have rather had him at 4 years, 68 million, but am fine with the extra 9 million over 4 years that it took to get it done.
Fournier to me is basically a lesser shooting but more athletic version of Kyle Korver or Joe Harris. That type of player can have significant situational value, but you don't pay them big money (and as we've seen from Harris who got a fairly big contract, Brooklyn didn't get what you would expect from him when the chips were down and they needed him). I'd have probably paid something like 4 years, 60 million for Fournier, though I wouldn't have wanted to, no way you go to 80 million even with a team option for that final year.
