Glad to have my favorite player locked up long-term.

That said, he becomes much more movable as a contract now. I’m kind of expecting a Beal trade by the deadline at this point.

Smart can’t be traded for 6 months, so that’s beyond the deadline.  If we get Beal at mid season, it won’t be with Smart.

As long as Smart is traded a year from now, trade kicker and all, I’ll be ok with this deal.
Otherwise I’ll have to learn to cope. It won’t be an easy task.

So the report that he was offered the MAX he was eligible for when this first came out seems to hold true, they just used the wrong per year numbers.

As always, solid reporting from the media... LOL.

Seems like trading Horford's expiring deal plus a few young guys and picks is another plausible option for the Celtics.

So we can throw out any Chris Mannix rumors and ‘inside info,’ right?

Dude has missed every shot he’s taken this offseason.  He knows squat.

He deserves it…He played through his last contract without complaining. There was no way he was going to settle for another underpay.

Stoked!  Will be happy to see him in green for the next 5 years, if that's what happens.

Hmm, I thought the trade deadline was later in the year now than in previous years where this could still possibly work? Can’t seem to find any verification of the actual trade deadline for this year. Didn’t it get changed the year before Covid to be a week AFTER the All Star Game? If so, this would still be in tgat timeframe I believe.

Evan Fournier money, with an extra year.  Does that make it an "unmovable" contract?

We're out of the max space game now.

It means they don’t want to move him.  But I have a feeling he’s more movable than Fournier would have been.  Cap could be 7-10% higher next year, and will be a minimum of 3%, so relative to the cap Smart’s deal is still cheaper.

No, it used to be after the All-Star game, then the year before Covid they moved it to before the All-Star game (Feb 6 is the date I remember).  With Covid they moved it back last season, but this year I think it’s back to the first week of February.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Not great - would have rather had him at $68M. He's a good player, but limited. I can't believe they gave him a trade kicker.

Whatever, if he's here for the long-haul, that's fine; if he's traded, that's fine. I won't lose sleep over it, but I'm not going to cheer this move from the front office. They gave him the most possible money they could have. I really hope this doesn't limit future possibilities with our team - say if TL, Nesmith, or Romeo break-out. Smart's a nice player, but he is what he is at this stage. I thought he was fairly paid on his last contract - didn't think he needed a $25M raise.

TP. Anything pre-Covid for me at this point is foggy at best.
