If Smart doesn't take it, he's gone. My guess is that Shroder would take his spot. Regardless, you extend Smart now or trade him now, not at the trade deadline.

If he takes it, he can be moved later if necessary on a "reasonable" contract.

Even if the C's think that deal will end up being tradeable its still risky. Even if you think his value is similar to Fournier who got 19 per a year over 3 and thus 17 over 4 for Smart is a "good deal" theres still the chance that changes over the next year. He could get hurt, he could suffer more defensive or shooting regression. Still I feel better that the rumors offer is 4/68 rather than the 4/77 some are reporting.

You think 2m a year is the big difference? Marcus probably feels Cs owe him for the last underpay contract.

Not sure what I want more....

...Smart not signing and so plays out of mind trying to increase his value for his unrestricted free agency.

...Smart signing and being happy, plays like he feels he has to show he was worth the contract.

Now, that not signing scenario could go bad because feeling he needs to show his value, he shoots too much, not getting any better at it and hurting the team. The signing scenario could go wrong, as well, as getting the big contract could cause Smart to coast knowing he is now making bank.

Thing is, knowing what we know about Marcus, him trying to be great too much is way more in his nature and likely than him coasting. So, if he signs, maybe knowing he has his money, he will start to play more within himself for the betterment of the team, as he doesn't have to put pressure on himself in trying to have a season that lands him the big payoff in unrestricted free agency.

Just fyi. Dangercart confirmed with Murphy that the offer is actually more like $17M/yr ($68M) and not starting at $17M for a max $77M extension.

Seeing a lot of people running with the assumption that Smart has been offered his max extension that begins just over $17M in Year 1.

Confirmation here that wording in original tweet of 17M per really means 17M per and not Smart’s max. Explains why it isn’t a done deal yet.

They’re offering roughly $17M per. Ryan McDonough expanded on that, calculating that the most they can offer is 4/77.  But at the moment, it’s closer to 4/68. Very fluid.

Hmm ... $68mil over 4yrs. If I'm Smart, I'm going to gamble at that number. Wait til next summer and look for a $20mil a year deal.

I feel confident enough I can get $68/4 elsewhere next summer even if I have a bad year. Worth the gamble for the extra $12mil.

If I were him I wouldn't. I don't think the $12m is worth gambling it all. He's injury-prone and has a very particular skill-set. Don't do what Oladipo, Noel and Schroder did.

Yeah, all it takes is landing on someone's foot the wrong way and he could have an injury that makes that $68 million offer disappear.

Yeah but Idk if he's worth taht much. He's always been injured. And his offense is putrid.

If Smart was smart, he'd take that offer. That means we won't have enough cap space for a max player next year?

Here are some more details on the largest extension Smart could sign:

Starts in 2022-23

4 years, $77m total

$17.2m, $18.5m, $20m, $21.3m annual salaries

I’m sure he’ll ask for that before even considering signing.

If we're being real, Smart at $17M/yr is probably the sweet spot for both parties. Maybe that could be upped to $17.5M so that he can get to $70M total.

If Smart declines, then you have to assume that he would be traded for another [somewhat useful] expiring plus a 1st. At that point, Schroder would be more of a necessity than a luxury. I love Smart, but  hate the idea of  signing him to $20M+/yr (what he'd probably command next offseason).

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a move to have a large contract to move for Beal in a S&T next offseason.  Smart and Horford would get close to what Beal's next deal would start at I think.
