Derozan to the Bulls, 3 years at $85m

https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1422649013069832193

Hmm ... I like that.

G: Lonzo
G: LaVine
F: DeRozan
F: Patrick Williams / Markkanen
C: Vucevic

I like the lineup more with Patrick Williams than Markkanen. Williams is a better forward than Markkanen because of his superior speed, handles, passing, defensive versatility.

Looks like my dark horse pick was right! Bulls are now the most hopeless team in the NBA as far as winning a title in the next decade. They are gonna ride that treadmill hard. If absolutely everything goes right they might make it to the ECF once and get blown out. The Knicks (another pick of mine) look poised to join them.

At least the Chicago and NY fans have something to watch. And it will help league ratings.

They're 10 years ahead of our timeline. They cleared the books and chased the big name FA's (James/Wade/Bosh) to pair with their young, promising core (baby DRose/Joakim), missed out and then eventually had their own star player (Butler) bail after years of stagnation. Feels like we're following the blueprint.
2021 Houston Rockets
PG: Kyrie Irving/Patty Mills/Jalen Brunson
SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo/Robert Covington
C: Kristaps Porzingis/Bobby Portis/James Wiseman

I think Markkanen is going out in a sign and trade. Heard the T'Wolves were interested.

EDIT: Derozon was a sign and trade for Thad + picks.

Good on Pop for getting actual value for a FA who was bolting.

Still don't see how a trade of Young ($14M) for DeRozan ($28M) is going to work.  CHI is over the cap with Caruso and Ball being added.  Maybe Markkanen is in it too at say $15M?

If the Spurs can spin Derozan leaving into Young/Markkanen/FRP/2 SRPs, I don't want to hear the word TPE ever again.

We could have tried that deal with Horford going to CHI but I am not sure they accept that   ;)  Seriously though, if Fournier was interested in CHI, it could of work but probably not interested.

Haynes is reporting Al-Farouq Aminu as the other piece going out for Derozan.

Hard to infer a lot from the Tatum quote, but it doesn't sound overly optimistic.

'Jayson Tatum on #Celtics trades: “You always hate to see guys leave, especially guys you build a relationship with. I guess that’s the nature of it. As a player all you can do is show up for training camp and whoever is there is there and get ready to play.” #Celtics #Tokyo2020'

Tatum seems like a guy who either likes or tries to like all of his teammates, which is probably a good thing.  But it means when guys leave/are traded, he might be disappointed at times.

I can't say I'm excited about the prospect of seeing us blow our MLE on Danny Green. I imagine that conversation is basically, ok Danny, if nobody else offers you more than one year, we will take you on for a 1 year deal at the full MLE.

It would be nice if we could fit Markannen into one of our trades while he's being shopped around.

Lakers just signed Nunn.

How do they find the salary room?

Celtics' priority, according to league source, is to retain a "salary structure" that makes it possible to sign a "major" player when he comes available, most likely next summer. Good chance they don't use the $5.7 taxpayers mid-level this time around.'

If this is to be believed, now the FO won't even use the MLE for a one year deal?  omg this is just overkill.

I think that's the spin the Celtics camp is releasing to their media sources to prepare for the possibility that nobody wants to sign with them for just a 1 year deal, even if it's at the full MLE.

That makes sense.  It is about $24M of expiring outgoing salary for about $27M of incoming salary.  Markkanen is still in play then.

For the two S+T trades, they take in about $47M and send out about $34M, plus Garrett Temple who was signed just for the deal.  All for Ball and DeRozan.  They are better, no doubt.  And if they keep Markkanen, they are pretty strong at all positions, albeit not all that deep.

How do they find the salary room?

If they are all signing vet min deals then they can fit as many of them as they want.

It's hard to compete with a team that is consistently convincing players to take less money to play for them.

It is plus Lakers probably pay more under the table
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin

Per Mark Murphy: the Cs are not expected to use the MLE this summer.

https://twitter.com/murf56/status/1422665334604062723?s=21

So basically don’t expect them to make any more moves. Wow. Just awful.
