Use it to trade for a point guard or swing man.

Pure guess, but I think they trade TT for a veteran perimeter player who gets taken into the Hayward TPE, creating a new TT TPE that rolls over into next year.

That wouldn't quite work unless the team we're trading with has cap space to absorb TT's salary. Or it'd have to be separate transactions where trade 1 is the opposing team sending us player X for the TPE, then trade 2 is them taking TT into the new TPE, thereby creating a TPE for us. I'm not sure of the legality of that.

Each team can structure a trade however they want, and it doesn't have to be the same for both sides. If Boston trades Thompson for Player X, and Player X fits into the Hayward TPE, then Boston can submit the trade that way while the team they're trading with just executes a straight "Player X for TT" trade with traditional salary-matching.

That is interesting and would be a great way to flip Thompson for a decent player (hopefully) and also extend the trade exemption.  The catch could be if we don't want to take back money for Thompson.  I guess it depends on who we get and what are plans are in terms of Fournier and any potential incoming sign and trade player.
