A couple of thoughts:
1. We currently have 4 developmental prospects (Timelord, Nesmith, Romeo, Pritchard) that need minutes to see what’s there or develop what’s there. I wouldn’t put Grant or Carsen in that category. If they surprise from here on out great, but they haven’t earned developmental opportunities yet.
You’re underestimating Grant and Carsen - a little more surprising in the case of Grant, since he’s gotten rotation minutes for two seasons now - the coaching staff, at a minimum, think he merits more than just developmental minutes. Physical defender who gets in his man’s airspace; stays in front; knows and goes where he’s supposed to be; versatile, guards up. Moves the ball on offense; low usage; almost exactly hits league-average for 3-pt% and eFG%. There’s a lot to like.
Carsen’s getting spot minutes to this point, so it takes something to track his progress; but progress he did, and in the area he most needed to: getting to the rim off the dribble and finishing. Small sample size, but he appears to have turned a weakness into a strength.
4. Specific to Nesmith/Langford, it seems like a luxury to have two developmental prospects at the wing spot when our two best players are also wings. It can be done (especially with Tatum’s ability to play the 4), but I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to include one of them in the right deal.
Good point. They’ve also got Fournier and Smart ahead of them. I’m giving the edge to Nesmith, because it looks like he’s going to be a shooter; he’s behind Romeo in defense, but he’ll be good there, too, and the marksmanship looks like it makes him an ideal complement to The Two Jays.
