I just saw Justise Winslow has a team option. Will Memphis pick it up and pay $13M or let him walk?
What do you think his market is, and should we consider him as another wing defender and potential PG spot backup? I like his utility, but man he's inefficient. So if he's cheap, I'd give him a look, I don't know.
If he can be signed for cheap he would be a great gamble to sign as a reclamation project. The playoffs are reinforcing the importance in versatile wings, it’s not a stretch to see a healthy Winslow as a Crowder like defender helping a team win deep in the playoffs.
More similar to Iguodala or Ariza on the Miami Heat and their inability to deliver enough offense to be valuable role players for their team.
Crowder is a legit 3+D guy.
Winslow is not.
Agreed on that regard. I just think that his best minutes in Miami were when they gave him the ball and gave him PG responsibilities. Don't recall that much since then, but recall being intrigued by the idea, plus having another defensive guy on the roster is useful, particularly a utility guy who you can plug in at pretty much any position.
So, if cheap... I'd have no problem having him around. And not that I'm calling for this, but it does give the Celtics more wiggle room to trade Smart if they want since you no longer have to worry as much about the defensive role he brought.
Yeah, I was very interested in Winslow's play during that stretch too. He was playing well rounded ball and his outside shot was falling enough to keep defenses engaged.
Since then, he has had a lot of injuries and that improvement in his shooting has vanished. It is unclear what he has to offer at this point.
In terms of the Celtics, I believe we need more and more shooting. I have little interest in putting non-shooters / low quality shooters around Jaylen and Tatum. I think we have enough of those. With Romeo and Nesmith still finding their feet in the league, I believe we need dependable shooters as alternatives to them off the bench.
(1) Romeo and Nesmith as the key bench wings
(2) Jabari as our backup PF with limited outside shooting. Semi, if he is retained, has some shooting but a low value shooter.
(3) Smart is a sketchy shooter. Inconsistent. Streaky. Capable but undependable.
(4) Horford is a plus shooter at center but Rob Williams and Moses Brown are both poor shooters.
So there is already a lot of non-shooters to limited shooters in the lineup next to Jaylen and Tatum. I want to give them more shooters. More spacing. Open the offense more.
Rather than making it more congested.
That is where my priorities are -- more towards shooting in filling out the bench roles. Providing alternatives who can shoot already present who cannot be depended on to shoot outside shots.
