The plan's to bring recommendations to the Board of Governors for a vote this summer and implement rule changes for 2021-2022, per sources. Next step will be to talk with league’s GM’s about the specific unnatural motions that’ll be formally recommended to owners for elimination.

Sources: NBA’s Competition Committee met Monday to further explore rules changes to restrict unnatural motions on jump shots players use to draw fouls. NBA wants to limit players - including stars like Trae Young, James Harden - from leaning backwards and sideways to draw fouls.

I think that is great.  Defenders should able to defend.  If the contact is due to the shooter leaning in, that shouldn't be a foul, make it a no call. Incidental contact.  Not all contact with a shooter needs to be a foul or offensive foul.  If they do that, and it starts counting as a missed FG attempt, shooters will stop doing it.

Now if the defender is at all out of control and the contact is created by the shooter stopping quickly or something like that (but not jumping or leaning in) then it can still be a foul.

This is hard to police but I think they can do it better if they try.  They will never clean it up 100% but they can get rid of a lot of it.

as long as they require a minimum of 10 minutes of instant replay review before making any final decision then im totally good with it :)

What these guys do is not basketball and this should be officiated out of the game.  Everybody hates it, its not entertaining.  NBA is about entertainment and nobody wants to watch players hunting fouls and endless trips to the foul line.  I dont fault the players, they are exploiting the rules to benefit their team, but you would get thrown off the court if you tried this garbage in pickup at any gym in the country.

Im with VanGundy - they alwo need to stop the breakaway fouls in transition.  Those should be the most exciting plays, instead we get a lame foul.  I would have them call what they are --intentional fouls.  2 shots and the the ball.  Problem solved.

Third, I would call a technical foul on any player that puts his finger up and makes a circular motion for replay.  Not serious, but I hate that sissy stuff.

Fourth, Refs get 1 min to review.  If nothing call stands and move on with game.  Im starting to greatly dislike replay.  Most time they dont change for the better.  Give each coach 1 review a game.  If they get it right, 1 more.  Nothing else.

Fifth, I would get rid of jump balls.  Reward the scrappy guards for tying up a big.

Six, I would also look at using the possession arrow to 'fix' incorrect calls.  If refs blow a call and 'headquarters' replay shows proof.  Change the call with possession.    This ties into me wanting to get rid of most replay and the circle finger waving.

End of game that buys a lot of rest for tired players.  Wrecks flow of game for fans though.

2 calls that annoy me:

The out of bounds call on the 3-point attempt in the corner. Not sure what to do about it but I just get annoyed by the play stoppage based on touch of the line. Technically right call but not worth breaking the flow of the game.  Seems impossible to change that though. It’s obviously a tough place on the court for players to know exactly where their feet are relative to the sideline.  Generally don’t step OOB anywhere else on a shot.

Also the barely perceptible shuffle “traveling” call on the catch and move.  Another play stoppage that isn’t necessary on the subtle moves.

Why does the competition committee need to discuss this? Just have Adam Silver tell the referees to stop calling them fouls. Common sense should tell the referees these aren't fouls, so why call them. Are these calls that David Stern wanted called to help boost the scoring for star players?

I'm glad I'm not the only person sick of seeing offensive players more concerned about drawing contact, than actually making the shot.

If they do fix this and the officials start calling it properly, the Celtics win total goes up by 10 just from this. Our defense got destroyed by these type of calls.

Exactly

So silly it hasnt been in place already

Also they have to include players ramming into a defender backpeddling with arms up ... and defender penalized for it

Lastly... I would like to see, less complaints towarda the refs.   Instead of straight tech.... 1st incident a warning for delay of game.  2nd technical. 3rd kicked out of game.  And then fine by league

So tired of the constant whinning after every play

I’d also say our offense gave up 3-5 possessions a game by Kemba and Smart taking wild shots early in the clock attempting to draw contact.  So this change might help our offense too!

I guess they could think up some sort of “warning track” like they do is baseball?  A change of texture near out of bounds?

I'm fine if it only penalizes unnatural movements.  Kicking shooting side leg forward (e.g. right leg forward for RHS shooter) on a jumper is taught to elite jump shooters to keep the keep the shoulders loose on their jump shot.  Refs will sometimes call foul on shooter when he kicks his shooting side leg forward, and this drives me crazy.  Someone needs to explain better to them.

The problem with today's rules, and also the problem with any upcoming rules: There's SO MANY little rules about motion now, Refs can whistle, then decide ANYTHING they want.

Example; Smart's last charge vs Durant, that was then overturned. Was smart still moving? Absolutely. Did Durant run full on into him without really seeing it coming? Absolutely. Could it have been called either way without much fanfare? Clearly, yes.

Defenders don't have to be absolutely set with no motion. That would make defence IMPOSSIBLE on someone that's moving sideways. This is why refs oughta "let them play" a bit more, and why so many people are complaining about the game not being the same anymore.

It's why Durant gets away CLEARLY injuring Tatum's eye, but on another possession, someone's 'fro gets grazed and it's a foul. Refs/league can do as they want on every single play. And rules like the ones they're gonna come up with to restrict this kinda action, are no different.

Sorry folks. I'm salty.
