Anyone who says the players back then were plumbers and carpenters who would never play in the modern NBA, you better watch this video of 67 year old Dave Cowens doing his own version of Luka warm ups

All the great players could play at any time. No one played harder than Cowens.

From my father when I was growing up, I heard this story about Cowens: don't know if it was actually true or just an overblown rumor:

Cowens was an interesting center in college but considered too short. Red Auerbach went to watch him play near the end of his senior season. Auerbach watched practice, talked to players including Cowens, and went to the game. Auerbach abruptly left the game in the middle of the first quarter, and everyone thought he had seen enough and had no interest in Cowens. When the draft came, he picked Cowens. When people asked why he didn't even watch him play during the visit, Auerbach said, "After I saw that guy practice, I didn't need to see the game. I knew we wanted him." So Cowens was the opposite of "Practice?! Iverson"

At a young age I do remember seeing on TV a jump ball between Jabbar and Cowens, and Cowens won the jump even though he was 6' 7"

When recently retired  Bill Russell watched Cowens play in camp for the first time, before his first NBA game, he turned to Red and said (I'm paraphrasing, from memory), "I think you found your new center."

Prophetic.

Loved how he played. Same tenacity as Smart.  More skilled.  Didn't give a #### if the other guy was taller or longer; Cowens would just out hustle him.  And he did. What an awesome guy.

Cowens has got to be one of the more overlooked stars in NBA history. His stretch from 1970-1978 was amazing. 19ppg, 15rpg, 4apg, elite defence and two championships. One of the greats.

Imagine if Giannis could get through free throws that quickly ;D
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

Cowens got called for a touch foul...got mad, then proceeded to bowl a guy over and yell at the ref--"Now, THAT'S a Foul"-!
Larry Bird was Greater than you think.

They wouldn't necessarily be great though.  The rules differences would be a big deal for some players and not much of a deal for others.

67 years old and he still shoots better than Smart.
There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, 'All right, then, have it your way.'

You don't have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.

Just curious what you do for a living? Actual physical work or sit in a chair a really really bad analogy

They have made the game easier not harder especially on offense.

Exactly. Players from the past would love to play under today's NBA rules.
