Stadium's Jeff Goodman was asked Thursday on 98.5 The Sports Hub's Zolak & Bertrand whether he believes Stevens will remain team president for more or less than 18 months.

"I think he coaches a year from now. I think somebody goes after him and he decides like, yeah, this was cool, I gave it a shot. ...

"I just don't see Brad being long for this. I think he'll miss coaching. That's what he's really good at. Not that he can't be good at this, but I've got some reservations about him as kind of a general manager of sorts."

"I think NBA teams right now would call Brad Stevens," Goodman said. "I really do. I think if he didn't take this job and make it public, and they kind of went behind closed doors and said 'Hey, Brad, why don't you see if something else there that comes your way.' But I think in a year, there will be other NBA teams."

"He's going to try this out," he added. "Maybe he does love it. Maybe at the end of the day he's great at it. My biggest concern with Brad Stevens as a general manager is I don't think he's a good liar. I think you need to be a good liar to be a great general manager."

Time will tell whether Goodman's assessment is accurate, but Ainge made it clear he believes Stevens will succeed in his new role. The former Celtics GM said Wednesday that Stevens was "born for this type of job."

Doubt it. Unless forced by Wyc

He gets to watch from a far.  Lend his Xs and Os expertise.   Attend his kids games etc.  Make the same money

Stevens is a master of not showing any emotion. Seems to me that he’s a good “liar”.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I saw him on CLNS Media and I don't know why he is so sure. Maybe this is what Brad has always wanted. He has a great coaching mind, but he is also extremely intelligent. It's entirely possible he prefers to do his thing behind the scenes.

The biggest bummer in all of this is we lost a great President/GM and a great coach. Perhaps we gained a great President/GM and our next coach will be amazing, but right now there are a lot more question marks than answers. Fwiw, I don't believe this was just a cost-cutting move.

Goodman gets something right about once every 5 years...didn't he get something right last week?

No way he gets 2 things correct.

That's the whole narrative evolving with Boston talk radio right now - that Wyc went with Brad because he was under contract anyway. Felger and Mazz at the Sports Hub have been pushing that narrative all afternoon about how the Cs could have got Sam Presti but decided to go with Brad for the cheap option. Their basis for the Sam Presti thing is that Chris Mannix said that they called OKC to inquire about Sam Presti. No word on how the conversation went.

And not many facts to support the narrative mind you, but a lot of supposition, which is what talk radio lives on I suppose. It's fun to speculate

I wouldn't discount it

Brad has zero GM experience

Now if his job mainly has to do with personnel (example hiring player development/film coach), oversight,  analysis

And Zarren and the coaches do the heavy lifting.  It can all workout

But thats a lot of dough to pay a guy just to be a personnel/strategist

Why do people pay attention to what Jeff Goodman says?
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

I wouldn’t be surprise to see Stevens coaching the Indiana Pacers in a couple of years
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin

Neither did Danny or Pat Riley. Doesn’t mean you can’t be successful. He’s only been in the job for a day, I think it’a bit too early to say whether he will succeed or fail. Also given Wyc and Cos history of continuity they don’t strike me as the type of people to make rash, short term decisions. And neither does Brad, come to think of it.

The Boston media and fan base will be scrutinizing him every day though. Every mistake or unpopular decision will be magnified. In a region where a championship is expected every year, he has a lot of work to do to win over hearts and minds. Starting with the draft.

Goodman also says Celtics should trade Jaylen Brown for Bradley Beal. He has followed Brad for a long time so I undesirables the take. We will see. Brad is awfully young to stop coaching. But he may realize that being an NBA coach is not suited for him. I do hope he succeeds as GM. He’s very bright and ambitious.

Goodman hates Jaylen and is always advocating we trade him.
