Educate me: Smart/KD and Charge/Block

Late in game 3, Smart stepped in front of KD and got run over. Charge was called, Nash challenged. After the timeout, the call was overturned and it was called a blocking foul.

I’ve watched that replay like 50 times now. I still don’t understand how it was overturned. Smart beat him to the spot and KD’s shoulder hit him square on the chest. As far as I know, u don’t need to be set or anything. This was also nowhere near the restricted area. What rule or explanation am I missing? Not asking to troll. I’m legit stumped.

It’s a nonsense call. The official said to Smart “you weren’t fully set”… problem is, it wasn’t a charge! It was an offensive foul away from the ball, you don’t need to be set!!

The moment the refs realized the Nets are trailing..they made sure it would do the stupidest thing by overturning an obvious charge call.

How can this charge call be any different from the one called on Harden also against Smart years ago and that was a charge.

Simply put...the refs are instructed by the league to advance the Nets no matter what and a 3 to 0 series lead was definitely on the agenda tonight.

I was baffeld by the call. I thought Nash was crazy for even contesting that, it was one of the easiest calls made all day long.

Anyway, Smart is a special player.

It was BS, total star call.   You could even see him pushing Smart.

Let me educate you, the ref needed glasses that made that review call.

One ref motioned that Smart wrapped him up and took him down. So only if Smart would had kept his arms out and been completely flat footed was that call going to stand against KD. It was a bad call to reverse, they did it keep it close for as long as possible. I was amazed two great plays on defense stolen in the fourth from Smart.

Apparently offensive players can destroy defensive players if the defensive player isn't completely set - even in a situation where he doesn't need to be set. We have some pretty tough guys on the team. Hopefully next game we go around shoving guys over when we have the ball so we can get some good looks. Or maybe we can fall down and get the foul call.

Only thing I can think of would be that the rules state players without the ball on offense have freedom of movement. But even still, offensive players can’t just run over people. The most egregious thing about this call is that calls are only supposed to be overturned when the evidence is clear. Sorry, but no.

I think after the Nets got the ball back and missed Smart was yelling something like “Just give them the game”. Did anyone hear this?

I hate complaining about the officiating because usually I think the refs just make bad calls all the time and every fan base is equally unhappy. But that one made no sense to me.

Also. I only tuned in to watch the last 5 minutes. All
I can remember is a bad foul call against the Cs that Brad challenged unsuccessfully. A soft foul on Kemba that sent KD to the line. A phantom call on Tatum in the open court when he avoided Bruce Brown. A makeup call for Tatum on the next play (tho he did get fouled). A foul on Smart when he perfectly picked Kyrie’s pocket. A long review on an out of bounds call between Thompson and Harris. And then the wild overturn on the Smart / KD play.

All that to say - what should have been an exciting finish to a big win for the Cs was just marred with over reffing. I only really remember a couple of made shots. Frustrating to watch.

I tuned into the game with just 5 minutes left and saw:

Smart strip Durant cleanly under the basket. Stevens challenges. Challenge denied. Van Gundy and Jackson are mystified as to how the call wasn't overturned.

Durant go to the line on a ticky-tacky touch foul.

Tatum then gets whacked on the other end no call. Van Gundy and Jackson then go on about how Tatum has to act/sell/embellish on his drives to get more fouls because he was clearly fouled

Tatum get a foul called against him when he didn't even touch the Nets' Brown.

Smart get run over by Durant on a clear offensive foul that got called. Nash challenges and the call is overturned. Van Gundy and Jackson call out the refs that the overturn was absolutely horrible and the wrong call to make.

This all happened with less than six minutes in the game and the Nets losing, but happened before the final two minutes in the game because the league reviews the last two minutes of the game and not any other. So the refs tried to give Brooklyn every opportunity to get back in the game and win, but made sure they didn't do it in the last 2 minutes because it saves the league from publicly disclosing so many bad calls and make it look like the game was a fairly officiated game.

At least in the small part of the game I watched, it was very much not a fairly officiated game.

you beat me to it. this should have been the way the refs called it and they did. but it was overturned by the NBA folks who review such things. they need to be shown how they were wrong and fix it going forward.

having said that, has any one seen the nba reviews of the last two minutes of the game? i am curious what that says. as of when i am writing this post, last night's games were not up.

It was overturned because the referees rule, they decide. So that is the how.

What rule or explanation are you missing? The WWF Rule AKA The phone call rule. The refs got a call from their bosses.
