So Kyrie, what exactly is the difference between racism and subtle racism ?

The former must be a reference to clear-cut attitudes and language that demean a person based solely on their race. The latter (subtle) is anything Kyrie sees or hears that he decides to label as racist behavior, most of which are illegitimate claims and lies.

I realize you don't actually want an answer to this question, but in case someone reading is curious and wants a very simplified version of the difference:

1. Having hiring practices that explicitly forbid hiring someone of a given race is overt racism.
2. Having hiring practices that will effectively prevent the hiring of someone of a given race is subtle (or covert) racism.

I would be wary, perhaps, of ridiculing something just because a player you don't like talked about it.

Do you understand the concept of a rhetorical question ?

I think it might help if you read my post again. :)

Again implies an initial reading. I've emboldened it for convenience.

I've heard some fans say some racist stuff inside the Garden (in the cheap seats, not anywhere near courtside). I've heard people say racist stuff outside the Garden. There are some pretty trash people out there, and some of them happen to be Celtics supporters.

Not that you imply otherwise, but every fan base has its trash.  I’ve seen racism in Boston (Southie in particular).  I’ve seen way more of it in other place where I’ve spent time, like Charleston, Atlanta, Houston and Orlando.  Hell, even an extremely progressive place like Portland, OR was surprisingly anti-Asian and anti-gay when I lived there (early 90s).

There are a lot of meatheads or just downright bad people, no matter where you go.  (As an aside, the most racist place I’ve ever been, by far, was South Africa.  )

Does that include the brutality currently being carried out
by blacks on whites in South Africa since the end of Apartheid ?

Question:  When I note my personal observation that South Africa is the most racist place I have visited, why do you reflexively counter that by pointing our black on white racism?

That said, I am happy to answer. I was in South Africa for my brothers wedding.  Most of the people in the wedding party and other guests were white. That’s where I saw the racism caramel and I didn’t observe any from blacks.  Beyond my personal observation, I do you know that there are policies in place that are racist, and there are racist hate crimes directed at both whites and blacks.

The problems of South Africa are not going to be sold on a basketball forum, but there’s probably room do you observe that there are multiple types of racism.  All of it is wrong, but I guess some is more understandable than others. I ask myself, what if I grew up in a society that was segregated, where my family couldn’t own property or many businesses, where the government was totally non-representative and outright racist, where I received inferior education and lived in poverty...  Well, under those circumstances I suspect that I would harbor a lot of hatred.

This was 100% Kyrie’s intention.  Take the focus off of his return to the Garden and how he completely flaked and quit on his team in the playoffs, and have the focus be on racism in Boston

I hope everyone here can find, or has found, a romantic partner who loves them as much as Kyrie seems to hate Boston. The negative and unproductive dialogue this has spurred in some places was probably Kyrie's intention and I can't recall another player ever preemptively voicing concern for the big R when they're asked how they expect to be treated by a fanbase they [censored] off.

He probably resents the city because, deep inside, he knows he failed.  He insisted on becoming “the man”, and couldn’t cut it.  He then surrendered and ran.  Being back in Boston reminds him of all his insecurities.

Well he was here, he never indicated that Boston was racist.  Both of his parents went to college there, and yet Boston was on Kyrie’s short list.  That suggests that his father had more good than bad to say about the city.

Old article...not sure if ever posted... but IT4 is right

“It does (take cojones to play for the Celtics). Not saying Kyrie doesn’t have them because he hit one of arguably the biggest shots in NBA Finals history, he’s one of the best point guards to ever play the game,” Thomas said. “That’s just like Boston and New York (the Knicks). You have to have a different type of skin to be able to succeed there.

It's unnecessarily inflammatory. And he has predictably gotten premature sympathy. I remember him saying, and I'm paraphrasing, that it was "nice to play for a real sports city," after he left Cleveland. Now we are apparently the worst fanbase.

I agree. It's like he blames his choking against Milwaukee, his grandfather passing, the locker room turmoil, and all other sources of unhappiness on the city.

I really can't help but wonder if this comment from Kyrie, was not meant to do long term damage to the image of the Celtics, and the city of Boston.

I really believe this comment is a form of dog whistling, to help continue the narrative that Boston is still a very racist city, that ethnic and minority players should avoid playing for. We all know of Boston's racist history of the past, and I imagine there is still a racist element in Boston, like there is throughout this fairly racist country we live in. I would not be surprised after living through the last four years.

I just can't help but believe there is a bigger picture with the intent and timing of his comment, and the subsequent damage from it. As long as players continue to place this label on Boston, other players may continue to give second thought before signing on with Boston teams.

I don't think Kyrie does things by accident. I also believe that he figures that vocalizing a concern about racist comments from our fans, would get a lot of attention especially during the playoffs.

Honestly, I hope he gets a lot of negative attention from the crowd on Friday, but not because the color of his skin (which would be stupid), but for being a pretty twisted individual and a walking s--t show.

A fan should probably throw soda at him and take one for the team lol. To show how much of a Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline. he is.

Marcus Smart fueling the anti-Boston flames:

Quote
When asked whether he has heard racial remarks made against opposing players from the Boston crowd, Smart confirmed he witnessed at least a few interactions.

“Yeah, I’ve heard a couple of them,” Smart said after practice Thursday. “It’s kind of sad and sickening. Even though it’s an opposing team, we’ve had guys on your home team that you’re saying these racial slurs and you expect us to go out here and play for you. It’s tough.”

Why comment at all?  I hope that he’s traded this off-season.

I’m not sure I trust Marcus here.  He happens to be the only person in America who heard a Texas Tech fan shout the N-word at him before going into the stands to attack him.  He says a woman outside the TD Garden loudly shouted the N-wordat him when he was doing a good deed.  Again, no witnesses or corroboration.  To me, he’s got all the credibility of Tawana Bradley.

I’d certainly take any comments like that, I think you should take them very, very seriously,” Stevens said. “I don’t know what context he was discussing there, but I do think, I know that the
Garden, I know that the Celtics, I know that the NBA, I know that everybody is very alert to making sure that our fans don’t cross the line. And I think that that’s really important.”

“People shouldn’t ever feel like they’re being discriminated against. But I think that everybody is dialed into that now,” Stevens said. “That hasn’t been brought to my attention that that’s happened, maybe but once or twice since I’ve been here, and it was dealt with immediately. But maybe it’s happened and guys haven’t talked about it. And certainly, Kyrie had never mentioned anything to me about it, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. And I think that those things should always be taken really seriously.”

Man, I really don't care about how we'd look, I sincerely just want people from our organisation to trash Kyrie

I think Tacko should seize the opportunity to become a Celtics legend and lay him out, Kurt Rambis style.

I like the way you think  :)
