I think we're going to be repeating this a lot over the course of this summer:
Due to cap / CBA reasons, a S&T is incredibly unlikely to happen. Pretty much impossible.
To be fair, the OP did desire to stay under the tax with this deal (after signing Fournier).
In response to the actual trade, I feel like we are just giving up too much. No reason for the Knicks to get a 1st from us if they want Kemba. I really see no reason to 'dump' him.
I don't see any plausible way the Celts are going to stay under the luxury and re-sign Fournier.
well dropping 50 million in salary in Walker and Smart certainly makes that more likely.
I'm going to go ahead and call it right now that the Celts aren't going to trade both Smart and Kemba without taking back any salary.
I think you could comfortably trade Smart into many teams’ cap space/TPE without having to take anything back if you didn’t want. I think doing so would be silly, but it’s for certain doable. That’s less clear about Kemba.
That's my point, there's no way they're going to dump Smart for nothing, yet I don't think that many teams are going to offer significant draft assets for Smart. So the only way to get back something like fair trade value for Smart is to take back salary.
Same difference for Kemba. Although you could maybe make a case for simply trading Kemba into another team's cap space as a benefit to the team from a roster construction / cap management standpoint, I very much doubt we would see Ainge do that, even if it's an option.
