Trade this year's 1st rd pick to get Lonzo Ball. As well as Kemba is playing as of late, his size makes him a defensive liability even when healthy. Lonzo isn't a volume shooter and has increased his shooting percentage. He distributes the ball well and has the length to switch off 1-4 on defense, which CBS values. I would imagine a player would need to be added as well. He is young enough to be in the current team time frame. As for cap space and his salary, I believe he'll be in the 4/$18/$72M range.  I believe there is more value in improving the PG position with a player like Ball than with a C as others have posted as their preference. The players in the projected range of the draft the Celtics are expected to be in appear to be project/role players and they already have a bench filled with them. See SI's latest player ranks with a link in the article to their mock draft below.

We could only get him through a sign and trade, which would hard calf us at the “apron”.  That’s probably not realistic for us unless we make some major salary dumps.

I like Ball but there's no way I pay him 18$ million a year. Someone will but I wouldn't. He's a role player. I'd pay 10-12 million a year for Ball. Maybe send out Smart for him in sign and trade if Danny doesn't think he can sign him to a reasonable contract.

don't trade the pick!

(unless part of a nice and large sized deal :o)

if no deal, grab a PG or big with the pick...

I suggested this last year, PG to replace Kemba.  They took one (PP) but not as early as I had hoped.  Now the question is, do they give him the reigns and move on from Kemba somehow or are they going to try and get another PG.  Springer is a guy who might be there where the C's are drafting.  He's 18 and if Kemba has another year in him, might be a good teacher for both PP and him.  Kemba has a player option in 22-23, I don't think there is a chance he opts out unless he's looking for one more long term deal.

If they keep Romeo and Nesmith, trade the pick. This team already has way, way way too much youth already. The last think it needs is another 18-19 year old on the team to develop. I know the draftniks on this site will hate that opinion, but it's true.

If you can trade this year's pick and maybe another year's pick, package it with a scrub or two and Marcus Smart I would be interested to see who Danny could get.

Obviously it won't be a sign & trade, as Roy mentioned, unless Kemba gets salary dumped, which I do not see happening. I think Ainge and Brad love what Kemba brings to the team.

I have no issues trading the pick if it helps land a nice roster upgrade as part of a deal.  That said, if we're moving Kemba, Smart and/or TT in that deal to both cut salary and acquire talent, I'd look to hold on to any future picks if possible.  We'll need ways to add cheap talent when the J's and any added 'star' player are getting paid the bulk of the money under the salary cap.

I could see Danny moving any or all of those 3 to manage future salary commitments if he can fill their slot with that same trade or through a FA.  Would not surprise me if they're starting to see Romeo as a replacement for Smart going forward and Smart is moved this offseason, possibly with this year's pick to add a good PF/C player.

Celtics fans: The C’s need to get to the free throw line more.
Also Celtics fans: We really need Lonzo Ball, who averages 1 free throw a game despite playing over 30 minutes.

I’m all in for dumping Kemba to the Knicks or another team with cap space who can absorb his bloated contract so that the Celts can do a sign and trade for Lonzo.

Trade Kemba to NYK

S&T Smart & Thompson to NOP for Lonzo.

Trade remaining TPE for Larry Nance Jr.

BALL - PRITCHARD
FOURNIER - NESMITH
BROWN - LANGFORD
TATUM - NANCE JR - F/A
WILLIAMS - F/A - KORNET

As you said, Lonzo is a much better fit for this team than Kemba. He’s big, plays good switch D, has become a consistent shooter, and doesn’t make too many mistakes or take ill advised shots. He’s pretty much Jason Kidd-lite. The question is, how much is he worth? I think he’ll be looking to get paid in the 20-25$ mill a season range.

I think this idea makes the Celtics take a major step backwards. The offensive production will all be centered around The Jays and Fournier, only three guys. You are relying on Timelord for big minutes, something he has shown he is incapable of doing physically. Nance isn't being traded for a salary dump reason into a TPE, no matter how many bad 1st rounders you send Cleveland's way. And it appears Langford and Nesmith, basically 2 guys with less than a year's worth of game experience under their belts, will be called upon for large bench roles.

That will make the team much worse. Yes, they haven't been great this year, but there's a lot of extenuating circumstances explaining why. Doing what you are calling for probably keeps us playing at that mediocre level, whereas rolling all of the current top 8 players back(Kemba, Smart, Brown, Tatum, Timelord, Thompson, Pritchard and Fournier) and adding a couple  of high quality, veteran role players and getting rid of the extenuating circumstances (no Summer League, no G League team to send young players to, limited training camp, limited preseason games, no practices, a condensed schedule, Covid and it's protocols, and injuries that players were recuperating from to start the season) probably by itself returns Boston to one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.

this is a big key to what needs to happen.  the questions are Who Are These Vets and How Does Danny Acquire Them?

Not against moving Kemba, Smart and TT if there's a deal to improve the team.  I don't see the proposed deals above as making this team any better and agree that they'd set us back significantly

the above two statements seem to be a bit contradictory. would you please expand. thanks.

I think he was going for irony not contradictory.

Everyone wants the C's to go to the line more but also want to add a guy that never gets to the line.
