Is building around two swings even a winning strategy? The Clippers have two better ones in Kawhi and PG and they haven’t won anything yet.

When they’ve gone head to head, I think it’s hard to argue that KL and PG have outplayed the Js.

Cool story but how about the other 80 games in a season?

how about fill out the roster with Ujiri's gems:

PG - Van Vleet - $19.7M
SG - Brown
SF - OG Anunoby - $16.1M
PF - Tatum
C - J. Poetl - $8.8M

Elite defense and clutch shooting. IF Van Vleet improves his passing a bit we are going to be a suddenly improved team next year like the Jazz this year.

Actually Danny could make it happen if he is willing to trade unprotected draft picks to Toronto and Spurs.

I'm breaking your rule and doing guys on rookie contracts

C - Rob Williams
PF - Lauri Markkanen
SF - Tatum
SG - Brown
PG - Lonzo Ball

My thoughts, more than the names in particular...we need a PG who doesn't require shots in order to be effective, yet who has the ball in their hands a lot and facilitates an effective offense when things get stagnant. Also not a liability on defense. At PF we need a good rebounder, defender, who can space the floor (basically the Kevin Love role). Any players that can fulfill those roles I'm good with.

As for Rob, I think he could be a defensive cog if he continues to improve. I also think if the Celtics are ready to move on from Smart, they can acquire a piece like I mentioned above.

I am very similar to this.  I am going to be a little lazy and not do the math on exactly the salaries but I think we would be really good with:

Center:    Rob Williams or even Thompson
PF:          Markkanen or Collins or Sabonis or etc.
Wing-1:   Tatum
Wing-2:   Brown
PG:         Smart

I feel the PF role is the key.  Having the right player for that role just makes everything else fit.  As for the PG, I think Smart would be fine with this team.  Based on having Brown, Tatum, and a scoring PF, the PG role is more tempo control and good defense.  I prefer Smart for that over Lonzo Ball but I feel there are a number of players you could find for that complementary role.  The Center position becomes the traditional blue collar, banger with focus on rebounding and defensive.  Williams may not stand up to all that much banging but depending on who the PF ended up being, it could work.

I am not sure exactly why Brown and Tatum are "swings" but I think the Jordan-Pippen combo certainly proved that two top wings can play and win together.  I have no qualms whatsoever about building around Tatum and Brown, whatever you want to call them.

I like that a lot.

Dejonte Murray
Jaylen Brown
Jayson Tatum
Larry Nance Jr
Christian Wood

 8)

great minds

If I’m building a team based upon non-superstar teammates for the Jays, regardless of cost, I’d lean toward:

Horford
Tatum
Hayward
Brown
Conley

None of the additions have made an All-Star game in the last three years, so it meets that criteria.  I think that those guys would play beautiful basketball.  Funny that we had four out of those five guys playing together, although never at full strength.

I agree that if cost is not an issue, this lineup would be great.  Especially a couple years ago.

*sigh*

Here's a little game:

Start with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Now fill out the rest of the lineup with some restrictions

- total cost of the other 3 guys has be $45 million or less
- nobody on a rookie contract
- nobody who has made All-NBA or All-Star in the last 3 years
PG: Cade Cunningham (he ain't on a rookie contract yet :P) / Brogdon / Rozier / George Hill / Satoransky / De'Anthony Melton
SG: Brown
SF: Joe Ingles / Hayward / Tobias Harris / Kyle Anderson
PF: Tatum
C: Christian Wood / Ibaka / Richaun Holmes

PG - XXX
SG - Brown
SF - Tatum
PF - XXX
C - Nikola Jokic

Get Jokic in hear and see what the two can do with a legitimate offensive engine.

Great exercise!

Rozier $18.9M
Brown
Tatum
Crowder $9.3M/Covington $12.2M
Ibaka $9.3M

$4-7M to spare... There’s also variations to this team that would swap Jrue Holiday at $26.3M or Brogdon for Rozier, but I prefer this squad. I tried to find an acceptable alternative including Draymond’s $22.3M, but there are no alternatives that wouldn’t leave a hole elsewhere in the lineup. I trust this lineup has all it takes to be a Championship contender for the next few years.

Hayward - $28.5M
Crowder - $9.3M
Theis - $5M

Then again, what's the point of this exercise if Brown and Tatum won't pass the ball?

G: Lonzo
G: Hield
F: Jaylen
F: Tatum
C: Jarrett Allen

I want more prolific accurate outside shooters next to Tatum and Jaylen which is why I prefer going small with them at forward positions rather than on the wing next to two bigs. Buddy Hield is a top 5 shooter in the league given his combo of accuracy and volume. He is perfect as a 3rd option behind Tatum and Jaylen.

I am less clear on who else to put beside them. Lonzo would be a nice fit due to his defense, passing and improved spot up shooting. A center with an offensive game would be ideal but not many of them around who don't cost an arm and a leg so an intelligent garbage man like Jarrett Allen fits the bill.

I am also interested in Pritchard as the starting PG long term as an alternative to Ball. That might free up enough cash to get a more expensive center too. Pritchard fits the bill as a highly effective outside shooter and steadying offensive presence at PG next to those three scorers at SG, SF and PF.

Dejounte Murray would be a great fit at PG too. I like those mentions.

We need  pass-first PG to set the tone for moving the ball. IMO there will be an enormous improvement to morale with that one adjustment. Brogdon is unselfish and also can shoot. He would be great.
