I'd be surprised, but the Lakers do a lot of weird things. Gasol would be a great 3rd string big on a contender. Knows what it takes to win, understands defence and passes well
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

That would have to be the slowest trio of big men of all time!

The Lakers are in a great position to play musical chairs with players. They are coming off a title, and good players want to play for them. The La La  location is also a factor.
On the other coast, the NY Nets are also in the same position. They haven't won a title, but they have accumulated enough stars  to be a ring threat to the Lakers. That makes them an attractive place for buyouts, as they have shown.

So it's really down to the Lakers and the Nets. They've used existing NBA rules to accumulate  the top two teams. LA vs NY.

If I were Silver, I would be concerned about this.  It's just too easy for the biggest markets to get star players. I don't have a solution to this. It's his problem.

The Celtics, by the way, had a similar advantage in '08 when they won a title. They threatened to establish their old dominance. But they were unlucky with injuries, and Wyc et al weren't willing to spend to keep them on top. So Ainge had to choose the slow, hard way through the draft. It hasn't really worked as well as expected.

Contender. That rules out the Celtics.

He'd look good in Denver or with the Clips.

If Wyc cheapens out again - meaning he is unwilling to spend more than $20ish Mil in luxury tax I think it will be time for him to cash in on investment and realize his 1000% capital gains. It’s just unfair to fans. Also while Celtics had said advantage with free agents in 2008-10 Danny somehow found a way to not trade his precious draft picks and brought in the likes of Von Wafers of the basketball instead of more James Poseys.

Definitely Brooklyn. That would be their weapon against Embid. He does give Embid problems. He would be worth it for that alone.
