Why exactly did we get rid of Rondo in his prime. He's still one of the top playmakers in the NBA.  He might be the difference of the Lakers not winning it all this year.  Hes that good. He was huge offensively and defensively last year.

Playoff Rondo is still no joke. A basketball Genius. And the biggest thing thr current Celtics team is missing is just that

What does Brad has to do with rondo as implied by the title of the thread but not expanded upon in your post

because he wasn't the kind of guy you want to have around for a rebuild with a new coach, for one thing.

in fall 2013 the celts were at least a few years away from even being a playoff threat (seemed even more so then that it does in retrospect), and Rondo was not a guy who could carry a team that lacked scoring threats.

besides, Rondo provided the value you're talking about in a reserve role.  chances are he was never going to accept that kind of backseat role while he was still on the Celtics.

the celts probably could make use of a player like rondo right now.  the 2014 celtics were a different story.

They sold high on Rondo.  It was the probably the right move then given the circumstances of the team and certainly the right move now in retrospect.

Outside of BBallTim, I'm not sure anyone saw him as a viable long term cornerstone on this team.

Once Rondo was back from his knee and all alone without KG and Pierce, he was a major ass. He didn't click with Stevens and was being about the worst team captain you can imagine.

Anyone remember his birthday he took off while out west on a road trip? That is probably what got him traded or what led to it.

I loved Rondo, almost as much as BBallTim, but, it was time to move on from him.

Because he refused to play defense, clashed with everybody, and went AWOL on the team.

He’s been on eight teams since 2015.  What’s that tell you?

If there is any regret, it should be that Ainge flubbed on the DAL pick.

Yeah, Rondo was not remotely in his prime. Wasn't at all the same on either end after he did his knee. He also didn't give a [dang] about playing if it wasn't a national game

Trading Rajon was the right move.

Drafting Yabusele instead of:
Malcolm Brogdon (36th)
Pascal Siakam (27th)
Dejounte Murray (29th)
Caris Levert (20th)
Malik Beasley (19th)
Deandre Bembry (21st)

Was the wrong move.

Not sure what this has to do with Rondo leaving, but sure, let's just randomly crap on Ainge's drafting in a thread that has nothing to do with it.  ::)

Celtics got a 1st round pick from DAL in that trade that turned into the immortal Dancing Bear.

So there is relevance here.

Rondo was traded to the Mavs, who then told him to stay home during the playoffs because he was such a cancer.

Also, while the Yanu pick stunk, we also got Crowder in that deal, so it was still a win for Ainge even accounting for Yabu.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I loved Rondo, but it's not like we haven't had PG success since his departure. 3 different PGs have made the All-Star team since we traded him - that has hardly been our weak spot.

This.

I expect that Rondo also probably had little desire to spend 3 or 4 years playing meaningless basketball on a team that had no hope of contending, and Ainge probably respected that enough to send him somewhere else.

Rondo literally quit on the Cs that season. He was a locker room cancer and Cs had had enough for a guy who wasn’t a true star player.
