I know it's early days but the emergence of Timelord as a starter and the positive immediate impact of both Wagner and Kornet seem to suggest Celtics could release Tristan Thompson in the close season. Is this a realistic scenario or do Celtics still need Tristan Thompson's experience and rebounding ? Shedding his 9 million salary would be another plus that could be packaged with the remaining 11million TPE to bring in another scorer

when the playoffs start , games slow way down and it becomes a chess match of the best players .  Thompson brings experience knowing the Lebrons games inside out and countering the slow deliberate pace or grind the stars and playoffs bring out .

No matter the excitement or pace of regular season games,  it’s always the same in the playoffs , old guys playing a slow strategy of scoring ....and you need bigs , serious bigs to stop your opponents one on one game

I understand his experience will be valuable for the playoffs which is why I am open to trading him in the close season after the playoffs.

You can't package a player with the TPE.

Still we should trade Thompson. I would have much preferred to let him go already instead of Theis.
I know Celtics players have been overpaid in recent years, but I think Theis could have been kept at a reasonable price of 7-10 mln a year.

Looks like Ainge was fed up with Stevens holding Pritchard and Timelord back by favoring his vets (Teague and Theis) and just threw them out of the door for just anything as they weren't a big part in the grand scheme of things as Ainge must have realized that the Celtics are not close to contending and should bet on development of their youngsters and come back strong in 2-3 years.

In that context we can assume that Ainge will be very active in trying to offload Thompson and Walker in the offseason. Clear the books and build around Tatum, Brown, Timelord, Smart, Pritchard, Langford and the other youngsters. Smart has a special place, so I believe he'll be extended as well as Fournier because of the high need for a shooter.

I definitely think he'll be moved; whether it's by himself just to shed his contract, or in combination with say Smart/Nesmith/picks for a much bigger trade.

I do think Wagner was basically brought in to audition for the 3rd Center role on next year's team. With the taxpayer MLE being used on 2nd Center. I am a little surprised Danny preferred Wagner/Kornet over a 2nd round pick or two, but it still gives him the chance at picking up a buy-out player this season, while also being able to pay Wagner more than other teams (we can pay more than the minimum).

But, yeah, either way, I think Thompson is essentially a break glass in case of emergency player once FA begins this coming offseason.

Thanks for the clarification about the TPE. I do agree Stevens seemed to be taken aback by the trade of Daniel Theis because he was a trusted member of Stevens system. Lets see how the new roster responds in the upcoming 7 game home stand

Yeah, I'd be happy to see him go, especially if we keep Wagner. We could easily draft a 3rd string calibre big in the 2nd round with Garza or Gafford IMO.

A 5 rotation of Williams-Wagner-Garza would be fine by me. Tacko is not impressive really. Would be happy with Kornet back on a minimum
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

Let's see how the playoffs pan out, but Thompson is likely gone. His contract may actually prove to be a nice little contract to add into a trade.

I am disappointed we did not trade Thompson already.

My assumption is that his Covid status prevented him from being traded to anyone who was interested in him as a player.

It's been said, but Smart/Thompson/Nesmith allows us to bring back around $35M in incoming salary. People are so concerned that we used the TPE on a non-star (I LOVE the move if we are able to re-sign Fournier), but we still have all of our picks and other young players to add another star if the opportunity should arise.

Depends on the deal of course. My view on TT was lower than most so I don't see the need to move him. He is a good third big man. Currently the C's have one MLE player and then rookie scale contracts at Center. If they want to worry about salary management look at the other positions.

Thompson has a player option for next year, right?  So you could only trade him if he opts in.
